Skilled Employment Assessment

You may be eligible to claim skilled employment points in your visa application

You must hold a suitable and valid full (permanent) qualification assessment outcome under the same nominated occupation from CA ANZ to apply for a skilled employment assessment only.

Skilled employment requirement

CA ANZ will only consider skilled employment that:

  • was undertaken after you have completed a tertiary or professional membership qualification that we have assessed as comparable to at least the level of an Australian Bachelor degree level
  • tasks performed are closely related to the nominated ANZSCO code for which you have received a suitable full (permanent) qualification assessment outcome – refer to the Australian Bureau of Statistics for occupation definitions
  • was undertaken within 10 years prior to your CA ANZ skills assessment application date
  • was paid and continuous for a minimum of 20 hours per week – Irregular periods averaging 20 hours a week over several weeks/months will not be considered -  unpaid/partially paid leave or volunteer services and experience carried out as part of a qualification will not be considered for skilled employment.
  • is a minimum of one year of accumulated employment – only one term of employment can be claimed for the same period. You cannot claim more than 12 months of experience in a 12-month period. If you have undertaken concurrent work, we recommend providing evidence of the role that is most suitable for the ANZSCO code occupation you are applying for.

Relevant skilled employment assessment documents

To be assessed for skilled employment, in most cases, you will be required to provide:

  • an employment reference letter from your employer
  • pay slips – one from the start, middle and end (or most recent) of the tenure

The employment reference must include the below information:

  • the employing business letterhead - this must clearly indicate full address (street and PO Box) of the business and any telephone, fax numbers, email and website addresses
  • name and original or correct digital signature of direct line manager, CEO or HR representative - name and position of signatory must be typed or stamped below the signature. A reference with a typed or illegible signature will not be accepted
  • direct contact number and email address of the person writing the reference. Personal phone numbers or addresses will not be accepted
  • job title
  • proof of service (i.e. exact start and end date). Multiple roles within the same employer must be listed: specific dates, unique job description and corresponding locations where the employment was completed
  • detailed job description or task list – duties and responsibilities must be stated by your employer. Generic job descriptions are not acceptable and will not be considered. Ensure that job description or task list reflects daily and monthly tasks you perform in your role. Tasks copied from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) occupation definitions will not be accepted
  • working hours per week and whether the role was full time or part time
  • whether the role was permanent, temporary or contract
  • salary

In the absence of work reference and payslips, you can provide the following documentation to confirm the above information:

  • official government tax records or documents that may include payment summaries, group certificates or notices of assessment listing company and applicant name
  • bank statements showing salary payments from employer with applicant and employer name
  • employment contracts stating job title, position description, working hours and salary
  • official employer appointment letters or position descriptions

If you are unable to provide the required documents, a Statutory Declaration or Affidavits may be considered. You must provide a Statutory Declaration stating why you are unable to provide the documents and including the criteria required in an employment reference letter, outlined above. All Statutory declarations or Affidavits must be clearly signed by an authorised witness. Please refer to list of authorised witnesses within Australia. If obtaining a Statutory declaration or Affidavit outside Australia, applicants should refer to an Australian Embassy or the legal standard of the country in which they are applying.

You can provide the below information in an affidavit/statutory declaration:

  • The reason/s why you cannot provide a reference and explain in detail the nature of your employment with the ceased business/company. Also include the dates of employment/length of business.
  • Attach supporting third party documentation, such as taxation certificates, employment contracts, pay slips and any other relevant information that verifies employment. If only the statutory declaration/affidavit is received, we may not be able to assess that component of skilled employment.

Self-employment

If you are self-employed you must provide a statutory declaration/affidavit with the following information:

  • details of the nature of your business/company, your position, the type of work you do and how many hours a week you were employed by the business.

We will also require the following original colour scanned documents:

  • business registration issued by the relevant authority
  • practicing certificate
  • tax reports covering the entire period of the business operation
  • reference from two or more clients on letterhead, stating the work done by your business and the time period your business was employed by the referee.

What you should know

  • Skilled employment assessment is optional. CA ANZ does not provide specific information on migration or visa requirements. Enquiries relating to visa, points table and migration requirements should be directed to the Australian Government, Department of Home Affairs.
  • Only submit a skilled employment application if you have received a suitable full (permanent) qualification assessment outcome under the same nominated occupation from CA ANZ.
  • If you do not hold a suitable full qualification assessment outcome from CA ANZ you can apply for a combined assessment here.
  • A combined assessment involves having both your qualifications and skilled employment assessed at the same application. However, your qualification will be assessed initially and only if a suitable outcome is achieved, CA ANZ will then assess the skilled employment component.
  • Skilled employment can only be assessed according to the information provided in your official employment documents.
  • CA ANZ may request further documentation before finalising your application.
  • CA ANZ reserves the right to contact your employer for further verification.
  • If the skilled employment requirements are not met or are unclear, the employment period will not be considered.
  • CA ANZ will not accept altered employment reference letter at any time after lodgement and decision of the initial application.
