How to become a CA Business Valuation Specialist

You must be a member of Chartered Accountants ANZ and meet education and experience criteria, including the requirements of regulations CR6 and CR6B. The program offers a choice of two pathways to entry:

  1. Post-graduate studies
  2. Online self-study course program

Choose your pathway

  • Pathway 1 - Post-graduate studies

    Follow these steps

    1. Review the requirements - You need to be a Chartered Accountant or Affiliate with at least two years of practical business valuation experience within the previous five years, where at least 20% of employment is related to business valuation and an additional 20% is related to the valuations field of work.

    You will also need to have completed the mandatory subjects at Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre or Kaplan within the previous five years. See step 2 for details.

    2. Enrol in award programs - Enrol in the mandatory subjects at either Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre or Kaplan as part of the Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance.

    Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre

    At Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre, you must successfully complete five mandatory subjects as part of the Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance (Business Valuation):

    • Portfolio Management and Valuation
    • Corporate Finance
    • Advanced Valuation for Corporate Finance
    • Applied Business Valuation
    • Investment and Credit Analysis

    Kaplan

    At Kaplan, you must successfully complete four mandatory subjects as part of the Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance:

    • Fundamentals of Asset Valuation
    • Business Valuation
    • Financial Modelling
    • Business Valuation Application

    More information is provided here. These subjects must have been completed within the 5 years prior to applying for CA Business Valuation Specialist recognition.

    3. Complete education - Successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance at either Macquarie University or Kaplan.

    4. Apply for recognition - Complete and return the CA Business Valuation Specialisation Application for Recognition form, attaching references and education documents.

    References

    You’ll need to provide two professional references from individuals who can positively attest to your skills, knowledge and experience in business valuation with your application. Consider the following when choosing your referees:

    a. One referee must be a Chartered Accountant with at least three years’ membership who has known you for 12 months or more.

    b. The two referees should not be from the same organisation.

    c. The referees must not be related to you, or employees who report to you.

    Education documents

    Finalise your application by attaching the following:

    a. A certified copy of your qualification

    b. An academic transcript related to the qualification which details the subjects which you undertook and their successful completion.

    These subjects must include the mandatory subjects listed in step 2 for your chosen course with either Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre or Kaplan.

    5. Application review - Following a review of your application you will be informed initially by email whether you have been approved or declined. You will also receive the CA Business Valuation Specialist signature banner for your promotional use. 

    If approved, you will receive a letter with a welcome pack containing your approval letter and your specialisation certificate. You will also be emailed a tax invoice which includes the application fee and the pro rated subscription fee.

    If you are declined because you do not satisfy the identified criteria, you will receive a letter and will not be charged any fees.

  • Pathway 2 - Self-study course or workshop program

    Follow these steps

    1. Review the requirements -You need to be a Chartered Accountant or Affiliate with at least four years of practical business valuation experience within the previous ten years, where at least 20% of employment is related to business valuation and an additional 20% is related to the valuations field of work.

    You will also need to successfully complete the Kaplan online self-study course which involves an assessment undertaken either by doing an exam or a portfolio interview. This must be completed within five years prior to applying for CA Business Valuation Specialisation. 

    2. Outline your experience - To get started, complete and return the Business Valuation Specialisation Pre-enrolment form.

    3. Enrol at Kaplan - Enrol in the Kaplan online self-study course using the link which will be emailed to you by CA ANZ. You will also need to confirm the assessment method of either examination or portfolio interview when you enrol.

    4. Complete education - Successfully complete the Kaplan online self-study course through the assessment process.

    5. Apply for recognition - Complete and return the Business Valuation Specialisation Application for Recognition form, attaching references and education document.

    References

Ongoing obligations

As a CA BV Specialist, at least 40% of your CPD requirement must be undertaken as valuations, with at least 20 hours specific to business valuations. You will also be asked to take part in peer reviews.
