How to become a CA BV Specialist

You must be a member of Chartered Accountants ANZ and meet education and experience criteria, including the requirements of regulations CR6 and CR6B. There are two pathways:

  1. Post-graduate studies
  2. Self-study course or workshop program

Choose your pathway

  • Pathway 1 - Post-graduate studies

    Follow these steps

    1. Review the requirements. You need at least two years of practical Business Valuation experience within the last five years, where at least 20% of employment is related to business valuation and an additional 20% is related to the valuations field of work.

    You also need to have completed mandatory subjects at Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre or Kaplan within the previous five years. See step 3 for details.

    2. Outline your experience. Complete and return the BV Specialisation Pre-enrolment form on this page.

    3. Enrol in the appropriate courses at either Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre or Kaplan.

    Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre

    At Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre, you must successfully complete five mandatory subjects as part of the Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance (Business Valuation):

    • Portfolio Management and Valuation
    • Corporate Finance
    • Advanced Valuation for Corporate Finance
    • Applied Business Valuation
    • Investment and Credit Analysis

    Kaplan

    At Kaplan, you must successfully complete four mandatory subjects as part of the Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance:

    • Fundamentals of Asset Valuation
    • Business Valuations
    • Financial Modelling
    • Business Valuation Application

    4. Apply for recognition. Complete and return the BV Specialisation Application for Recognition form, attaching references and education documents.

    References
    You’ll need to provide with your application two professional references from individuals who can positively attest to your skills and knowledge in business valuations. One reference must be from a Chartered Accountant with at least three years’ membership who has known you for 12 months or more.

    Finalise your application by attaching the following: a certified copy of your qualification and an academic transcript related to the qualification which details the subjects which you undertook and their successful completion. These subjects must include the mandatory subjects listed in step 3 for your chosen course with either Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre or Kaplan.

    5. Application review. Following a review of your application you will be informed by letter if you have been approved or declined.

    If approved, you will receive a welcome pack containing your approval letter and your certificate. You will be emailed a tax invoice which includes the application fee and the pro rated subscription fee.

    If you are declined because based on your application you do not satisfy the identified criteria, you will not be charged any fees.

  • Pathway 2 - Self-study course or workshop program

    Follow these steps

    1. Review the requirements. You need to have at least four years of practical Business Valuation experience within the last 10 years, where at least 20% of employment is related to business valuation and an additional 20% is related to the valuations field of work.

    You must also have successfully completed the online self-study course or workshop, and assessment at Kaplan within the five years prior to applying for CA BV Specialist recognition.

Ongoing obligations

As a CA BV Specialist, at least 40% of your CPD requirement must be undertaken as valuations, with at least 20 hours specific to business valuations. You will also be asked to take part in peer reviews.
