About this specialisation

This is a great opportunity for Chartered Accountants to consolidate their expertise in a specialised, growing field that is complex and intellectually rewarding with both business and practice.

The Business Valuation Specialisation acknowledges your skills, knowledge and experience in the fields of fair value reporting, tax, mergers, acquisition, expert evidence and strategic decision making.

As the business valuation profession grows, business and professional organisations globally recognise the need for consistent principles and guidelines.

Members who meet the education and experience criteria are eligible to become Business Valuation specialists. This includes meeting the requirements of CR6 and CR6B.

Choose from two entry pathways

The programme is open to members with at least two or four years’ relevant experience, depending on choice of pathway. Experience must comprise 40% of your work during that time.

Pathways with workshops have options for face-to-face or distance learning. There are also options for your assessment preference, including a three hour exam or a portfolio interview.

  • Pathway 1 - Post-graduate studies

    Follow these easy steps to apply through pathway 1 

    1. Review requirements

    At least 2 years of practical Business Valuation experience within the last 5 years, where at least 20% of employment is related to business valuation and an additional 20% is related to the valuations field of work.

    Successfully completed four mandatory subjects as part of the award programme through Kaplan including:

    • Fundamentals of Asset Valuation
    • Business Valuation
    • Financial Modelling
    • Business Valuation Application

    These subjects must have been completed within the last 5 years prior to application.

    2. Outline your experience. Complete and return the BV Specialisation Pre-enrolment Form on this page.

    3. Enrol with Kaplan. Enrol in the appropriate course including the four mandatory subjects listed above.

    4. Apply for recognition. Complete and return the BV Specialisation Application for Recognition form

    References 

    You’ll need to provide with your application two professional references from individuals who can positively attest to your skills and knowledge in business valuations. One reference must be from a chartered accountant with at least three years’ membership and who has known you for 12 months or more.

    Educational documents

    Finalise your application by attaching the following to your application: a certified copy of the qualification (if completed) and an academic transcript related to the qualification which details the subjects undertaken and their successful completion.

    These subjects must incorporate:

    • Fundamentals of Asset Valuation
    • Business Valuation
    • Financial Modelling
    • Business Valuation Application

    5. Application review. Following a review of your application you will be informed by letter if you have been approved or declined.

    • Approved (You will receive a welcome pack containing your approval letter and your certificate. You will be emailed a tax invoice which includes the application fee and the pro rated subscription fee).
    • Declined (based on your application not satisfying the identified criteria you will not be charged any fees in this case).
  • Pathway 2 -Workshop assessment and education component

    Follow these easy steps to apply through pathway 2 

    1. Review requirements 

    At least four years of practical Business Valuation experience within the last 10 years where at least 20% of employment is related to business valuation and an additional 20% is related to the valuations field of work.

    Successfully completed the workshop and assessment component within the last five years. Workshops can be completed as a face-to-face intensive workshop or through a distance learning option.

    3. Enrol with Kaplan. Enrol for the workshop and assessment education component pathway.

    4. Apply for recognition. Complete and return the BV Specialist Application Recognition Form.

    References

Obligations

At least 40 per cent of your CPD requirement must be under taken as valuations, with at least 20 hours specific to business valuations. You’ll also be asked to participate in peer reviews as perhaps a reviewee or reviewer.
