During your application

What to expect during your skills assessment application and guidance while we assess your application.

We understand this process can be complex. Here is what happens after you submit your migration skills assessment application.

Initial assessment and additional information required

  • We will do an initial assessment of your application within 10 business days.
  • If anything is missing, we will email you and ask for more documents or details.
  • You will have 20 business days to send us the additional information. If you need more time, you can ask for an extension.

If we cannot reach you

  • Your application will be placed on hold for up to six months* from the date it was submitted.
  • We will attempt to contact you up to three times during this six-month* period.
  • Near the end of this timeframe, we will send a Final Reminder with a due date for submitting the required information.
  • If we do not receive the requested information or documents by the due date, we will assess your application based only on what you have already submitted. This may result in a not suitable outcome.
  • If your outcome is not suitable, you can apply for a reassessment once you meet the criteria or request a review if you disagree with the decision.

*Important Update – Transition Plan

Please note that for applications received from 1 January 2026, the hold period for incomplete applications will be reduced from six months to four months. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to streamline the assessment process and improve response times.

We encourage applicants to respond promptly to requests for additional information to avoid delays or a not suitable outcome.

Assessment suitability

We can only decide if your application is suitable after we have fully assessed it.

Combined assessment

For applicants seeking a combined qualification and skilled employment assessment, skilled employment will only be considered if the qualifications are deemed suitable.

If the qualifications are found not suitable, claims of skilled employment will not be considered due to the absence of a suitable qualification assessment. Fees are non-refundable.

Applicants may submit a reassessment for a combined qualification and skilled employment reassessment once they meet the criteria.

Nominated occupation

If your skills match a different occupation than the one you nominated, we will let you know and ask how you would like to proceed.

Before contacting us for an update

  • Login to your account to check your application status.
  • Status updates are shown throughout the process.
  • Make sure your application is outside the estimated processing time before reaching out.
  • Have your application reference number ready.

Withdrawing your application

  • You can withdraw your application, but an administration fee will apply.
  • No refunds are given if we have started work or completed the assessment.
  • If you want to apply again in the future, you will need to submit a new application.
