Skilled employment assessment
Eligibility for skilled employment points
Skilled employment assessment is optional. While not mandatory, an assessment may enable you to claim points for skilled employment in your visa application. Determination of the points remains at the discretion of the Department of Home Affairs.
To apply, you must have a valid and suitable qualification assessment outcome (previously known as full (permanent) skills assessment) under the same nominated occupation from CA ANZ.
Requirements for skilled employment
CA ANZ considers skilled employment when it:
- is undertaken after attaining a tertiary or professional membership qualification assessed as comparable to an Australian Bachelor’s degree or higher
- involves tasks closely related to the nominated ANZSCO code for which a qualification assessment outcome (previously known as full (permanent) skills assessment) has been received. Refer to the Australian Bureau of Statistics for detailed occupation definitions
- occurs within the ten years preceding your CA ANZ skills assessment application
- is paid and continuous for a minimum of 20 hours per week
- consists of at least one year of accumulated employment, with no overlapping claims for the same period. You cannot claim more than 12 months of experience in a 12-month period. If you have undertaken concurrent work, we recommend providing evidence of the role that is most suitable for the ANZSCO code occupation you are applying for. We will ensure that the longest possible period of skilled employment is recognised in your assessment.
Documentation for skilled employment assessment
You will need to provide:
- an employment reference letter from your employer
- pay slips from the start, middle, and end (or most recent) of your employment period.
The employment reference must include:
- a business letterhead with full address and contact details (contact number, website and email address)
- your name and a clear signature of a direct line manager, CEO, or HR representative, with the position clearly indicated
- your job title, exact start and end dates, and a detailed job description reflecting daily and monthly tasks. Generic descriptions or those copied from ABS will not be accepted
- your working hours per week and employment status (full-time/part-time, permanent/temporary/contract)
- any salary details.
Alternative documentation
In the absence of a reference letter and pay slips, the following may be submitted:
- official government tax records or documents that may include payment summaries, group certificates or notices of assessment listing employer and applicant’s name
- bank statements showing salary payments from employers indicating applicant and employer’s name
- employment contracts with comprehensive job details (job title, position description, working hours and salary)
- official employer appointment letters or position descriptions.
If you cannot provide the standard documents, a Statutory declaration or Affidavit might be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
A Statutory declaration or Affidavit must include:
- detailed reasons for the absence of a reference and official documentation
- an in-depth nature of your employment, including dates and duration
- supporting third-party documents like tax certificates, employment contracts, pay slips and any other relevant information that verifies employment.
Note: Assessments cannot rely solely on the contents of a statutory declaration or affidavit. CA ANZ requires official documentation as evidence to support claims made in statutory declaration. Without supporting documentation, the skilled employment component may not be considered.
An authorised witness must clearly sign all Statutory declarations or Affidavits. Please refer to list of authorised witnesses within Australia. Digital Commonwealth statutory declarations are accepted.
If obtaining a Statutory declaration or Affidavit outside Australia, applicants should refer to an Australian Embassy or the legal standard of the country in which they are applying.
Self-employment documentation
Self-employed applicants must submit:
- a statutory declaration detailing the business nature, your role, work type, and weekly hours
- business registration from the relevant authority
- practicing certificate
- tax reports for the entire business operation period
- two or more client references on letterhead confirming the work and duration of service.
Translations
Documents not in English requires an English translation completed by a certified translator. You must include the original language documents as well as the translated document with your application.
If you live in Australia, you must enclose an English translation completed by an accredited translator.
If you live outside Australia, you must enclose an English translation completed by a translator who is certified by the appropriate authorities of your country of residence. The translation must include the full name of the translator, contact details, the name of the company/ department the translator works for (if applicable) and certificate number (and/or stamp) of the translator (if applicable).
What you should know
Skilled employment assessment is optional
CA ANZ does not advise on migration or visa requirements. Direct such enquiries to the Australian Government, Department of Home Affairs.
Eligibility
Submit a skilled employment application only if you have a suitable qualification assessment outcome (previously known as full (permanent) skills assessment) under the same nominated occupation from CA ANZ.
Combined qualification and skilled employment assessment
When applying for a skilled employment assessment, you have the option to combine this with your qualification assessment. This streamlined approach involves two key steps:
- Initial qualification assessment: Your qualifications are assessed first to determine if they meet the required standards.
- Subsequent skilled employment assessment: If your qualifications are deemed suitable, CA ANZ will proceed to assess your work experience.
This combined assessment ensures that your qualifications are in line with the requirements before considering your skilled employment experience.
If the qualifications are found not suitable, claims of skilled employment will not be considered due to the absence of a suitable qualification assessment. Fees are non-refundable.
Applicants may submit a reassessment for a combined qualification and skilled employment reassessment once they meet the criteria.
Further documentation
CA ANZ may request additional documents to finalise your application.
Verification rights
CA ANZ reserves the right to verify employment details with your employer.
Unmet requirements
Employment periods that do not meet the requirements or lack clarity will not be considered.
