Member of a professional association becoming a registered tax agent

Understand the requirements and pathways for CA ANZ members to become a registered tax agent in Australia

In brief

  • No extra education needed for eligible members to be a registered tax agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB or Board)
  • Eligibility is based on voting membership with CA ANZ and at least 8 years of relevant experience in the past 10 years
  • Members should contact the TPB to confirm if their overseas or non-tax roles are eligible to be counted toward ‘relevant experience’

Requirements to become a registered tax agent under Item 206 – Membership of a professional association

To become a registered tax agent with the TPB under Item 206 - Membership of a professional association pathway, a member must have at least eight years of full-time ‘relevant experience’ in the past ten years. CA ANZ members have membership of a professional association provided they are voting members. CA ANZ is classified as a professional association as it is a TPB recognised tax agent association. CA ANZ annually renews its status as a recognised tax agent association with the TPB. There are no additional education requirements for this pathway.

This pathway is relevant for members who:

  • Completed their CA qualification with another Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) body
  • Moved to Australia
  • Received reciprocal member with CA ANZ, and
  • Gained at least 8 years of relevant experience in the last 10 years.

For members who completed the CA Program with CA ANZ and meet the relevant experience requirement, this pathway is more efficient compared to Item 201 - Tertiary qualifications in accounting.

Relevant experience

A member must have at least 8 years of ‘relevant experience’ in the last 10 years.

Members who do not meet the 8 years relevant experience requirement, may be eligible to apply under the ‘Tertiary qualifications in accounting’ pathway. That pathway may require additional study
