- Draft applications deleted; new process requires fresh submission.
From 6 October 2025, Inland Revenue retired the agent-only IRD number application service. All new IRD number applications must now be made using the online Individual IRD number application, the same channel available to the public. This article explains the recent change and its application to tax agents.
What has changed
With the withdrawal of the agent-only service in myIR, tax agents now use the same online application form as the general public. Supporting documents must be uploaded as part of the process, and the same validation steps apply regardless of whether an application is made by an agent or an individual.
What agents need to do now
- Use the online application: Submit all IRD number applications, including those for clients, through the standard Individual IRD number application. Two-step verification is now compulsory for all my IR users.
- For overseas individuals: If applying on behalf of an individual overseas, agents cannot use the online application and need to email the IR742 offshore individual application to the offshore mailbox [email protected].
- Prepare documents in advance: Ensure clients supply required identity and supporting documents before starting the application, to avoid delays.
- Review internal processes: Agents may need to adapt onboarding procedures to account for the extra time and client involvement now required.
- Communicate clearly with clients: Clients may need reassurance that agents can still manage applications, even though the process looks the same as an individual lodging their own request.
Impact on draft applications
All saved draft IRD number applications in myIR were deleted on 29 September. These were not carried over into the new system. If you or your clients had incomplete applications, they must be restarted using the current online application.
This may create additional workload for some agents, particularly if several draft applications were awaiting completion or supporting documents. It is important to review your client files now to identify any cases that need to be re-lodged.
Adapting to the new process
To manage the transition smoothly:
- Develop checklists: Standardise the documents typically required (e.g., passport, visa details, proof of address).
- Clarify responsibilities: Confirm early with clients what they need to provide and when.
- Track progress manually: Keep a log of applications submitted, as the new form may not integrate with myIR in the same way.
- Escalate delays: Contact agent support if applications take longer than Inland Revenue’s published processing timeframes.
