Andrew Smith, CA ANZ Senior Tax Trainer, provided an overview of family trust elections—what they are, when they apply, and key considerations for tax practitioners. He highlighted common scenarios where elections are required and flagged areas to watch out for.
Amy James-Velagic, Assistant Commissioner – Private Wealth at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), shared insights from the ATO’s recent engagements. She discussed trends observed in the private wealth sector and highlighted areas where the ATO sees frequent issues with family trust elections.
