Submission on the Occupation Standards Classification for Australia

CA ANZ recommends updating key accounting role descriptions to improve occupation and labour market data quality and better inform government policy.

Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand’s (CA ANZ) submission to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on the Occupation Standards Classification for Australia (OSCA) 2027 update consultation outlined how key accounting occupations have evolved and made recommendations to update their descriptions to reflect the changes.

The OSCA describes all occupations in the Australian labour market. It is used to inform education pathways, skilled migration programs and strategies to support a skilled and adaptable workforce.

Based on feedback from our members, policy experts and other industry stakeholders, CA ANZ recommended that the ABS:

  • Update the definition, specialisations and main tasks for Accountant (General)
  • Update the alternative titles and main tasks for Taxation Accountant
  • Update the definition, alternative titles and main tasks for External Auditor
  • Align the description of Financial Adviser with the requirements in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth).
