Effective time management
“Beware the barrenness of a busy life.” Socrates
In Brief
- Develop a study plan
- Use these three resources provided to help you make the most of your time.
A key to success in CA Foundations is to carefully manage your time. You will need to balance work, study and life responsibilities, and also create a study schedule and stick to it.
Create a regular study habit by setting small achievable goals. Make your goals specific and link your goals to a particular time and place. Being specific helps make the habit stick. “After work I will eat dinner, then I will study for 30 minutes at my desk. I will do this every weeknight".
Top tips
- Plan regular study time.
- Break large tasks into small achievable parts.
- Use breaks as ‘rewards’ – a great tool to do this is the ‘pomodoro technique’.
- Keep moving (don’t get stuck on one topic).
Study plan and schedule
Create a weekly study plan and a subject schedule. Using the subject topics may help with this. Print this out and display it in your study space.
This will be a visual reminder of what you need to do.
Tick off each week as it is completed and celebrate your achievement.
This visual sign of your progress will help motive you to keep going.
Weekly study plan
Download and fill in this document [Weekly Study Plan] with your weekly study plan.
- Your weekly study plan should include all days of the week and the times in the first column.
- Include your work, study time and other life commitments. Plan to study at the time when you are most effective. If it’s the morning, get into work early and do an hour of study before the work day begins. If you are a night owl, plan to do your study after work.
Or, even better, use an app (eg Google, Outlook etc) get a view of and manage all your activities (study, work, personal, social) to help with planning and achieving your goals.
Perhaps take an agile approach and use kanban apps to track your study.
This is a good idea for tracking both individual subjects as well as the whole CA Foundations journey including tracking MPE and meetings with mentors.
