Regional Manager – Andrew Quinlan
I hope you, your teams and your families are keeping well.
CA ANZ continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 developments and our number one priority is taking practical action to protect and support our members, our team and the more vulnerable members of our community.
To ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of our members, candidates and people, we moved to online or virtual member support and learning experiences. We don't expect to hold face to face ceremonies, events or meetings until sometime after 31 July 2020.
With the community need for social distancing still the norm, we also don't anticipate reopening the office in the near future. When we return it will be gradual to take into account government advice and social distancing requirements. The date of the next review in this regard will be 31 July 2020 so meetings will continue to be held virtually.
As an extension of making COVID-19 resources available to you, we are collating themes that members have identified as areas of importance. We've collected relevant resources on each of these themes and are including these resources on our website for you to easily access. We will make new resources available to you each week and to start with please see below links to the first two, 'Cashflow planning and forecasting' and 'Return to work and change management'.
On a another note and on behalf of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, I would like to congratulate Victorian members, Annette Kimmitt AM, Andrew MacNeill OAM and Eddie Kutner AM as recently being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours List.
It is wonderful that the important work of these members has been recognised in this way and more about each of their contributions as well as other Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand members recognised.
Speaking of awards, we would like to take this opportunity to make a call for nominations for the CA ANZ Young Regional Advocate award by 31 July 2020. If you know an emerging CA who has demonstrated a passion for the profession and has strongly contributed to the community through participation in not-for-profit governance or volunteering their professional skills, please let me know and the Victorian Council will review the nominations at their next meeting in August.

Recap of last month's activities/events
Last month we held a wide range of webcasts/webinars but a couple hosted by the Melbourne team included the Sharing Knowledge: Assurance and Reporting on 2 June by Reporting and Assurance Leader, Amir Ghandar and the Building Knowledge: Economic Update on 3 June by Vince LoMoro of Westpac. Both events were very well attended, allowing us to reach more members for these types of events than ever before and in both sessions the quality of the Q&A session was noted by both members and the presenters. Thanks for all your support for events such as these during this period as it allows us to bring you more great quality speakers via webcast in coming months as well.
As mentioned above, we will continue to offer a range of events and activities online and once we are able to begin face to face delivery again we will confirm details with you.

Regional Chair update
It has been over three months (a quarter in accounting speak) since our lives were dramatically changed by the imposition of COVID-19 restrictions. Much discussion arose about survival during these difficult times and helping ourselves and our clients to navigate through this great unknown. Now as we approach adequate management of the threat we are looking forward to the new norm and how we can recover from these unique circumstances. CAANZ has been at the forefront of thought leadership and the dedicated hub for COVID-19 resources is regularly updated with relevant content and useful links. One of the important and very enjoyable roles of the Councils is to evaluate nominations for recognition of our members for providing exemplary service to CAANZ and our profession. Recently we were very proud to have one of our Victorian members, David Gibbs FCA, recognised with Life Membership of CAANZ, the highest honour Council can bestow. Life Membership is given to members who have delivered outstanding and distinguished service to CAANZ over and above what is normally expected of an office bearer through voluntary contribution to the organisation. The by-laws state only 40 members can hold Life Membership at any time so to have David conferred this honour emphasises the contribution David is making to the Victorian and wider community. Congratulations David, thank you for your efforts and commitment and we look forward to being able to celebrate this award with you.
Recognition of our members can only be achieved by receiving information and supporting nominations from our Victorian members, so I encourage you all to consider who you know who might be worthy of an award. Currently we are seeking nominations for the following:
- Young Regional Advocate - recognising a member under the age of 35 who has made a significant contribution to the profession and the community
- President’s Prize – Selected by the President from the Young Regional Advocates recognised in the year.
- Fellowship – for outstanding achievement and contribution to the profession for a sustained duration
- Meritorious Service - for outstanding achievement and contribution to the profession without the need to consider tenure
The CAANZ website contains more detailed information about these awards so please consider your peers and colleagues and if you think any meet the criteria, nominate, and the Council will evaluate.
As Councillors we are very fortunate to have direct participation on various panels and attendance at meetings. This enables us to connect with members who are interested in a particular segment of our profession and receive feedback on issues and opportunities to consider. Working with CAANZ then ensures that members opinions are being considered and actions taken where it is advantageous. If you are involved in a group or forum and wish to have a Councillor attend please don’t hesitate to connect with Regional Manager Victoria and Tasmania, Andrew Quinlan in the CA ANZ Melbourne office who will coordinate with your group Andrew.Quinlan@charteredaccountantsanz.com
Lastly, enjoy the benefits of the current restrictions, but we will all look forward to exploiting more freedom soon, and keep happy and healthy.
