NSW Council elections will open later this week on Friday the 17th of September. Members will receive a separate email when the election period opens from electionz.com who are conducting the online ballot on behalf of CA ANZ. Please look out for the email and we encourage members to participate in the election.
With ‘R U OK?’ day last week, we’ve included some mental health and wellbeing resources in this edition. We hope you find them of value.
Michael Croker published the following announcement in the weekly Tax Newsletter on Monday morning. The various professional bodies, including CA ANZ & CPAA, have continued to meet with the Government this week to address concerns. Michael will provide a further update next Monday pending the outcome of the discussions. If you have any questions, please contact the tax team at [email protected]. If you don’t currently receive the weekly Tax Newsletter and would like to receive, you can subscribe by updating your communication preferences in your My CA account.
The CA ANZ Tax Team was verbally advised by NSW government officials late last week that recipients of NSW COVID Business Support (JobSaver) would receive an email directly, or via their accountant, tax or BAS agent:
- Reminding them of an employer’s obligations to retain employee headcount, and
- Asking them to advise Service NSW if the business was no longer suffering a 30% decline in turnover.
Our original understanding was that the email would be worded in such a way that businesses would not need to repeat the original application process. That is, the email would be a reminder, not an obligation to check in detail the circumstances of all employee departures, re-test turnover decline, obtain a second accountants’ letter etc.
CA ANZ understands and supports the policy objective here: that recipients should not continue to receive NSW COVID Business Support if circumstances have clearly changed since applications were first made.
However, the CA ANZ Tax Team has since seen a copy of the Service NSW email. We have heard concerns from CAs about the wording of the email and the lack of clarity about what work needs to be done by accountants in order for their clients to respond. This has prompted further engagement by the professional bodies with NSW officials.
As a result, our understanding is that there will be:
- A public clarification issued by Service NSW of the intent of the email and the response expected from businesses and their advisers; and
- No delay in the next fortnightly payment of NSW COVID business support.

East Coast Tax Training Community | FY 2021-2022
The East Coast Tax Training community has been created to serve tax, accounting and superannuation practitioners across the east coast of Australia. Each session is tailored to the community with training topics chosen based on the community’s demands and needs.
Facilitated by CA ANZ tax trainers Peter McGinty and Tristen Webb, participants join a training community for a full financial year, though we can accommodate new participants wishing to join communities' mid-year. This Tax Training Community is held via Virtual Classroom on a monthly basis (excluding December and January).
