CA ANZ launches Financial Abuse Playbook

Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) has launched its new Financial Abuse Playbook, a practical resource designed to help professional accountants to identify, prevent and respond to financial abuse with confidence and professionalism. The playbook supports members in recognising warning signs, applying ethical and professional judgement, and taking appropriate action when concerns arise.

Financial abuse can occur in many forms, including coercive control, elder abuse and the misuse of financial authority. As trusted advisers with visibility of financial transactions, records and decision-making processes, accountants are uniquely placed to identify risks that may otherwise go unnoticed.

“Accountants occupy a unique position of trust. This playbook provides practical guidance to help members recognise risks and respond appropriately while acting in the public interest.”
Ainslie van Onselen, CEO, CA ANZ

What's in the playbook?

The playbook provides:

  • Guidance on recognising indicators of financial abuse.
  • Practical response strategies and escalation pathways.
  • Advice on applying the Code of Ethics in complex situations.
  • Tools, engagement letter paragraphs and checklists to support professional judgement.
  • Resources to help members protect vulnerable clients and strengthen practice safeguards.

Looking ahead

Financial abuse is an issue that affects individuals, families and communities across Australia and New Zealand. By increasing awareness and capability, the Financial Abuse Playbook equips accountants to play a meaningful role in preventing harm, supporting affected clients and upholding the public interest.
