Understanding Whistleblower Protections: A Guide for CA ANZ Members

This information sheet explains whistleblower protections in Australia and helps CA ANZ members understand their rights and options

In brief:

  • Explains what whistleblowing is and the role whistleblowers play in identifying and reporting wrongdoing
  • Summarises key protections, including confidentiality and protection from victimisation
  • Explains how whistleblowing laws differ by sector, organisation and disclosure type

Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) has partnered with the Human Rights Law Centre's Whistleblower Project to develop this practical guide for members on Australia's whistleblowing framework.

Whistleblowers play an important role in promoting accountability and integrity by bringing information about wrongdoing to the attention of management, regulators and, in some circumstances, the public. However, navigating Australia's whistleblowing laws can be complex, with different protections applying across sectors and types of misconduct.

This information sheet provides an overview of key whistleblower protections, including legal immunity, confidentiality requirements and protections against victimisation. It also explains how different legislative regimes may apply depending on the type of organisation involved and the nature of the disclosure being made.

The resource is intended to help CA ANZ members better understand their rights and options when considering whether to raise concerns about wrongdoing. It is general information only and does not constitute legal advice.
