Climate-Related Financial Disclosures: What They Mean for SMEs in Australia

In collaboration with the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO), CA ANZ has published an information guide to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to understand how they fit within Australia’s climate-related financial disclosure ecosystem.

As Australia enters a new era of mandatory climate-related financial disclosures, SMEs are increasingly part of the conversation. While SMEs are not directly subject to reporting requirements under the Corporations Act 2001, they may be asked to provide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data to large businesses and government entities as part of supply chain transparency and sustainability initiatives.

Why SMEs Should Pay Attention

Even though SMEs are not required to report, they may be asked to provide GHG data to support the disclosures of larger entities. This is especially relevant for SMEs in high-emitting sectors such as logistics and agriculture. Early engagement with sustainability reporting can offer competitive advantages in tenders and customer communications.
