Submission on positioning Australia as a leader in digital economy regulation

CA ANZ responds to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on automated decision making and AI Regulation

In brief

  • A technology-neutral approach is critical to ensure regulation remains fit for purpose
  • We believe there are many regulatory areas where technology neutrality can be improved
  • Safeguards against potential manipulation and biases will be important when developing principles

CA ANZ provided feedback to Department of Primate Minister and Cabinet in April 2022 on Positioning Australia as a leader in digital economy regulation

The issues paper focused on how Australia’s regulatory settings and systems can maximise opportunities to enable and better facilitate the responsible use of technologies, with a specific focus on Artificial intelligence (AI) and Automated Decision Making (ADM).

In our response we focused feedback on areas that we believed we could add the most value covering questions relating to specific regulatory changes the Commonwealth could implement to promote increased adoption, opportunities to make regulation more technology-neutral, actions regulators could be taking to facilitate the adoption of AI and ADM and if increased automation of decision making would have adverse implications for vulnerable groups.
