How can I change my mentor in the MPE Tracker

Find out the process to follow when changing your mentor in the MPE Tracker

In Brief

  • Have a conversation with your outgoing and new mentor
  • Ensure all MPE completed with your outgoing mentor is up to date
  • Record your mentor change in the tracker

Throughout your Mentored Practical Experience (MPE) journey, you may choose to change your mentor. Some examples of why candidates choose to change mentors include:

  • You are changing employers and would prefer to have a mentor within the same organisation
  • Your technical competency areas have changed and you would like a mentor who is experienced in these
  • Your mentor is relocating and no longer able to fulfil their mentoring obligations
  • Your mentor is no longer an approved mentor

After having a conversation with your mentor, you should take the following steps:

1. Ensure all MPE completed with your outgoing mentor is up to date

Before closing off your relationship with your outgoing mentor, ensure that all MPE tasks completed when they were your mentor have been signed off by them. This includes; competencies, annual plans, check-ins and reviews.

Sometimes when you change mentors, you also change employers. When changing employers under the following conditions, you will also need to ask your outgoing mentor to complete a Mentor’s Interim Report.

  • Moving from an ATE to an RTE
  • Moving from an RTE to an ATE
  • Moving from an RTE to a different RTE

This Mentor’s Interim Report must then be provided to your new mentor when commencing your mentoring relationship so that your new mentor is aware of your competency achievements during your prior mentoring period. The report does not need to be provided to CA ANZ, unless requested.

2. Record your Mentor change in the MPE Tracker

To change your mentor, select ‘edit’ within the Mentor heading. This will prompt you to enter your new mentor’s start date. You do not need to enter the end date of mentoring with your previous mentor as the end date of your previous mentoring relationship will automatically be taken as the day prior to your new mentoring relationship commences.

If there was a gap in time-period between starting with your new mentor and finishing with your previous mentor, this would mean that you were ‘out of approved employment’ during this time. You would record this gap in approved employment in the ‘Pause my MPE’ heading’. Note; if the gap in time period was simply due to weekends/public holidays (i.e. your new mentor relationship starts on a Monday, and your previous mentoring relationship ended on the Friday beforehand), please do not record this as a pause in MPE.
