Affiliate membership

Essential for all principals in practice without a CA designation

IN BRIEF

  • If your practice uses the 'Chartered Accountants' name, all principals need to be CA or Affiliate members
  • Affiliate membership is for any principal or partner of a Chartered Accounting firm without a CA designation
  • Becoming an Affiliate member also gives you access to extensive professional support and timely information

Extend your influence

To be a chartered firm, all practice principals and directors need to be a Chartered Accountant or hold Affiliate membership with us.

Your newly appointed or existing directors, principals or partners can seek to expand their professional opportunities along with those of the practice by becoming a Chartered Accountants ANZ Affiliate.

Affiliate benefits

Becoming an Affiliate member also gives you access to extensive professional support and important information

  • Access to quality, up-to-date knowledge and information across a broad range of industry related fields
  • Networking opportunities with members and industry experts
  • Professional and technical support

You are entitled to use the ‘Affiliate Chartered Accountants ANZ’ designation after your name on your business card and signature.

If your practice is located in Australia, you can also apply for Practice Entity Membership. This may provide you with an extra level of risk management through access to the Liability Capping Scheme.

Before you become an Affiliate

To qualify for Affiliate membership, you need to, among other things:

  • Apply to become an Affiliate member
  • Apply to become a non-member principal
  • Hold a recognised degree from an Australian or New Zealand university (or have an equivalent overseas qualification)
  • Have a minimum of 5 years full-time postgraduate experience, either in accountancy or a related area of expertise
  • Agree to the standards of practice and professional conduct expected of a Chartered Accountants ANZ member
  • Demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of the ethical and public practice requirements of Chartered Accountants ANZ

You will need to include a copy of your degree or qualification certificates and transcripts with your application.

There are additional requirements, depending on where you practice, which will help you apply for membership. These can be viewed in the sections below.

Location-based requirements

  • Australian members

As part of your application, you must also agree to:

    • Be bound by the Chartered Accountants ANZ Royal Charter, By-laws, and Regulations
    • Complete the CA ANZ Public Practice Program (PPP)

As an Affiliate, you aren’t able to hold a Certificate of Public Practice (CPP).

No more than half of those with voting rights in your practice, including principals, directors or holders of an interest in the practice can be Affiliates.

If you leave the practice to work elsewhere, you no longer have Affiliate membership. Membership is linked to your employment, not to you individually.

  • New Zealand members

In New Zealand, Affiliate members are technically referred to as Non-member Principals.

As part of your application, you must also agree to:

    • be bound by the Chartered Accountants ANZ Royal Charter, By-laws, Regulations, NZICA Act and NZICA Rules
    • abide by the Code of Ethics set by the NZ Regulatory Board
    • complete the CA ANZ Public Practice Program (PPP)
    • provide a written statement of support from one of your practice principals who is an existing CA ANZ member

As a non-member principal, you are not able to hold a Certificate of Public Practice (CPP).

No more than 49% of the principals, directors, holders of an interest in the practice or those who have voting rights can be non member principals.

If you leave the practice to work elsewhere, you will lose your non member principal status. The status is linked to your employment, not to you individually.
