Xero wellbeing programme helps business owners “step in”

Many business owners aren’t sure where to start in supporting their team’s wellbeing.

In brief

  • Xero Assistance Programme provides wellbeing support to small business owners
  • 40% question if it is their place to be involved in their employees’ wellbeing
  • The CA Wellbeing programme supports members’ mental health and wellbeing

Xero has extended the pilot of its Xero Assistance Programme (XAP) to provide free and confidential wellbeing support to approximately 850,000 New Zealand small business owners, their employees and families.

Craig Hudson, Xero’s Managing Director New Zealand & Pacific Islands says, “New Zealand has critical mental health statistics to address as a country and for many people their workplace can play a central role in building their resilience and positive mental wellbeing”.

Xero and the Mental Health Foundation recently released the 2019 Small Business Wellbeing Report exploring the mental wellbeing of Kiwi small business owners. The report provides insight into the current attitudes towards wellbeing amongst small business owners and the key stressors many face.

It also revealed that a concerning number of business owners (40%) question if it is their place to be involved in their employees’ wellbeing.

Sue Pak FCA, Head of Accounting at Xero says “The report shows us that many business owners aren’t sure where to start in supporting their team’s wellbeing.

“This is where accountants can step in - as trusted advisors they can have conversations with their clients about the business as a whole, rather than just the numbers.

“They don’t need to have all the answers, but by simply asking, listening and being equipped enough to point them in the right direction they can make a massive difference.

“I encourage all accountants in practice to use the Xero Assistance Programme as a means of kicking off the wellbeing conversation with their clients, and letting them know it’s not just for reactive wellbeing support, but proactive as well.”

The Xero Assistance Programme is available to all Xero partners, and those on a starter, standard or premium subscription plans. The service is accessed through mental health service provider Benestar and users can get free and confidential face-to-face, telephone, live chat or online counselling, as well as use of the Benehub and Benestar app.
