- Events of note in the past month
On Wednesday 3 October, Wellington will host a New Members Ceremony to celebrate new CAs and ATs. It is looking to be a large event with 60 recipients and about 220 attendees in total attending. It will be held at Prefab Hall in Jessie Street, Wellington and looks to be a great night. Attendance has closed due to the high demand.
Events of Note in the last month
On Tuesday 11 September, Wellington hosted a further session for Professional Ethics training, which has been a popular course across the region.
Craig Norgate CA ANZ 2018 Scholarship winner
On Friday 7 September, Wellington Regional Manager Mike O'Leary and Account Manager Michelle Harvey celebrated with Craig Norgate CA ANZ 2018 Scholarship winner Kaitlin Corrigan of ServiceIQ with a morning tea at her office.
To honour and celebrate Craig Norgate’s contribution to the Chartered Accountant (CA) profession and community, two memorial scholarships to support emerging leaders from regional New Zealand were created. Of the two scholarships available, one is specifically for CA students from the Taranaki region. Kaitlin was the winner of the Taranaki prize as she comes from a rural, dairy farming, family in the Taranaki.
Kaitlin intends to enrol in the first CA pathway module next year and appears to be very well supported by her workmates.
Take the Opportunities conference
On Friday 21 September, the Wairarapa Local leadership Team hosted a boutique, destination conference at Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa in Martinborough. The conference, titled Take the Opportunities was very well supported by local CA members and featured a day filled with information sessions and break-out workshops. It was a fantastic success, a credit to the LLT and a clear example of members delivering value to members. Well done to Fiona and team.
On Thursday 27 September, Whanganui members’ celebrated new members, milestone members and two Fellows at their annual Gala Event at Frank Bar. Two new members were awarded their certificates, one 25 year, one 40 year and one 50 year member. Top of the night were the Fellowship Awards to Murray Carey FCA and Philip Lendrum FCA.
My CA launch
MyCA was launched last month with two communities of interest as pilots – the Business Valuation and the Rural Primary Interest Group. Local leadership team members and Regional Councillors were given the opportunity to be observers of these first two groups, so it would be worth asking them what they have seen. During the next seven months or so, other communities will be added and invitations to all members will be issued. Please pay attention to this as it is going to deliver access to all of your records and opportunities to your phone (smart device).
Live stream SIG event
There was a significant milestone in Wellington this month. The Financial Services Special Interest Group (SIG) live-streamed their SIG Event, Asset Allocation. It was a pilot for Wellington and the invitation to join online was limited to the Fin SIG membership list only.
It was very successful and Wellington will be rolling this capability out across the Lower North Island and opening up the invitation lists for online, digital events more.
CA ANZ is also ready to dip its toes back in the social media world with a Lower North Island Facebook account. It has taken us a while to work out where social media sits with our other communication channels. A pilot in Auckland has been successful so we are going to do the same in the Lower North Island. We are hoping that more media channels will result in more information and choice, rather than more digital noise. Tell us your experiences through your LLT.
Note that LLT election voting will open and run from 8 -31 October. It is your chance to have a say as to who represents your area. Lower North Island has LLTs in Whanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Wellington. Contact details for each are on our website.
Next month I will be bringing you more news about a partnership and scholarships we have entered into with Icehouse.
For the Icehouse:
I will also have more information about the release of a new advertising for CA ANZ.
Topics of Interest - Tax Agents and IR
I am told that Wellington Region is the most productive area for questions about CA ANZ Tax Advocacy. I have handled a few in the last month and know that the gap in tax advocacy is us telling you what we are doing, rather than your professional body doing something about various problems.
Recently CA ANZ and IR had a constructive workshop to discuss and work through the various contact scenarios for Tax Agents. IR have subsequently met internally to identify and again work through their contact points and reasons for contacts that bypass the Tax Agent.
IR inform us that not all direct contacts were planned and intentional. Their restructure of delivery and transition to new computer system (START) have both been contributing factors. As has additional programming required in the START to reflect tax agency relationships.
It is IR's intention that they will only contact clients of tax agents (in respect of tax types linked to the agent) in exceptional circumstances. Please keep the feedback coming in if this changes.;
