Regional manager update

On the Regional Council, we welcome our new Council member Michelle Shafizadeh FCA who has stepped in to fill the Casual Vacancy position left by Peter Rupp as he fill his new responsibilities as Vice President, Australia at the national level. Michelle brings her knowledge experience of CAs in Government to the Council, in her role of Assistant Auditor General- Technical and Audit Quality Office of the Auditor General for WA.

WA Regional Council continues to hold their meetings, where possible, in member offices. This is a great way to liaise with members and to catch up and network with your Council of representative members. To date in 2018, meetings have been held at Wesfarmers and RSM. If you would like for Council to be hosted in your office, please contact the Perth office to arrange.

We have some exciting news to share with members; Regional Manager WA, Aymee Mastaglia, was selected last week in this year's contingent of the WA Business News Top 40 Under 40 Winners. We in the Perth office are very excited for this fantastic recognition of Aymee's and the team's work for members in WA, and the WA community.

Recap of last months events/activity

CA Program (CAP 118) Welcome Evening

On Monday 26 January, we held the CA Program Welcome Evening and hosted 30 candidates who are enrolled in their first module. The panel featured Kevin Nagamany FCA (one of our CA Study Masterclass Facilitators), Aymee Mastaglia (Regional Manager, WA), Stacey Forward (Relationship Manager) and Dorota Ryba CA (Past Capstone Candidate & YCA Panel Member). The session provided crucial information to new candidates and advice from the panelists on their key insights to succeeding in the CA Program.

Careers Advisors Breakfast

On Tuesday 27 February, WA Careers team held our regular Careers Advisors Breakfast at Perth Office. The networking breakfast welcomed 15 attendees who participated in a panel session on what events and initiatives we have planned for high schools and universities over the upcoming twelve months. Thanks to Wahseem Soobratty (TBC Accounting Academi, Curtin University), Janet Simmons (Career Advisor – ECU TBC), Joel Teo and Shannon O Brien (CA Student Representative and Accounting student at UWA) for their contribution to the discussion as panelists.

Achiever Networking Evening

This was not only a simple ceremony where we presented 15 Achiever Students their certificate on 28th February. The networking evening also placed the Achiever Students to a very relaxing network with each other and their Employers. This was a very great chance for networking and celebrating, also sharing their experience about how their placement went.

Sharing Knowledge Sessions - Perth and Banbury

The first successful Sharing Knowledge Session has been held on 7 March in Perth and 8 March in Bunbury, where Ceri-Ann Ross FCA, Reporting Leader  provided an update on the current reporting and assurance ‘hot topics'. This included 'Triple trouble’, which is three new accounting standards on revenue, financial instruments and leases and how they are shaking up the financial reporting world. It was a well-attended event with many of our members at both locations.

Volleyball Carnival

Perth CA team just teamed up for the first time and already claimed the trophy. What a sweet victory! The Indoor Beach Volleyball Carnival is the great chance for us to get to know our fellow colleagues, socialise with fellow professionals. Then by having a few laughs whilst enjoying the sand between toes, we got a trophy to bring home.

Thanks to Stephen Macdonald, a skilled executive coach and facilitator (Partner and Organisational Psychologist at Kaya), who was presenting at this luncheon on 11th February and helped enlighten for our attendees on effective leadership and management practices, team effectiveness and the enhancement of individual mental health and wellbeing.

Employment Evening

On 14th March, we welcomed 400 students who joined us for quality conversations with employers to gain insights into what employers are looking for in their candidates. We had a range of employers exhibited at our event, and it included specially designed activities.

Students had a chance to attend the mock interviews, LinkedIn profile photo shoots and information sessions on what to wear for interviews and in the office. There was also a panel discussion featuring business leaders, and presentations on personal branding and interview skills and techniques.

FBT Workshop

The full day workshop held on 14 Mach provided a comprehensive overview of key FBT principles, and enabled the opportunity for attendees wanting to keep on top of changes and developments in the FBT landscape.

The Western Australian region honours the Fellowship award with our annual Dinner. An opportunity for our Fellows to celebrate this status, and to welcome the newly appointed Fellows into this prestigious group.

Sharing Knowledge Sessions - Constructions Contracts - Thursday 19 April

This joint presentation by Dan Kearney and Michael O’Kane from the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety will provide valuable information on the legislation to assist members of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand to advise clients in the construction sector where they may be experiencing difficulties around payment.

Building Knowledge Session – Safe Harbour  – Thursday 22 March

This is a member-only session not to be missed if you provide advice to corporate clients of any size, from SMEs to publicly-listed companies.

The presentation will cover two sessions:

  • “Safe harbour” provisions to provide directors with relief from insolvent trading provided the companies and directors meet certain conditions and are taking reasonable steps to restructure; and
  • A stay on “ipso facto” clauses in contracts, which allow contractual rights to be exercised by a party to a contract if the other party enters voluntary administration, receivership or a scheme of arrangement, or because of the other party’s “financial position”.
