Recap of last month's events/activity

Victorian Regional Council Elections and 2018 Annual General Meeting

I’m delighted to share the results of the Victorian Regional Council election, held between 14 September and 9 October. The results have been confirmed and were announced at the 2018 Victorian Annual (Ordinary) General Meeting held in Melbourne on 11 October.

I would like to congratulate the following Councillors who have been elected for the period 2019-21:

  • Ms Deanne Firth FCA
  • Mr Peter Fromont FCA
  • Ms Elizabeth (Liz) Smith FCA (Re-elected)

With the Chartered Accountants ANZ Board meeting in Melbourne on the day of the 2018 AGM, members in attendance were presented with a great opportunity to network with Board members and the Executive Leadership team in an informal setting.

We host the Board regularly in Melbourne and wherever possible encourage members to take the chance to connect directly with the Board members and the Executive Leadership team to provide feedback in an informal setting.

On behalf of the Victorian membership, I wanted to thank David Thompson FCA for his outstanding service as the Victorian representative on the Chartered Accountants ANZ Council since the merger in 2014.

David retires from his role at the end of this year and has made a great commitment and contribution on behalf of the Victorian membership, and from a personal point of view, he has been a fantastic sounding board and advisor to me, also serving as Chair of the Victorian Council in 2014.

Regional Chair Update

The World Congress of Accountants (WCOA) is almost upon us, kicking off in Sydney on 5 November 2018.

I'm looking forward to attending and have no doubts that this will be a fantastic event which will deliver a memorable experience. The conference program has something for accounting professionals working across all segments of the CA ANZ membership – from the impact of AI and data-driven decision-making in large corporates, how to attract new talent into SMEs, to the impact of Blockchain technologies in public practice and in public sector financial management. As well as these sector specific presentations there will be an opportunity to hear from global thinkers and change makers on topics such as trust in business, creativity and innovation and potential future shocks to the global business environment. Beyond the various workshops, presentations and keynote speeches, one of the attractions for me was the opportunity to meet with accounting professionals from across the globe; with up to 5,000 attendees expected, WCOA will provide opportunities to share ideas and discuss topical issues with like-minded professionals who will bring different perspectives from their own geographies.

Charles McNeill, Chair
Victoria Regional Council
