Regional chair update

Australia’s first major quadrennial event of this year has just concluded with the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast – a successful event showcasing Australia to the world or at least to Commonwealth countries.

The next quadrennial event to hit our shores is the 20th World Congress of Accountants to be held in Sydney in early November this year. This event will attract finance professionals from over 130 countries across the globe (not just the Commonwealth!) and provide an opportunity to hear from world class speakers and leaders across the finance and business community. Check out the program and how to register for this great event at wcoa2018.sydney.

Meanwhile, many of you would have seen the recent announcement from CA ANZ Chair Murray Jack FCA, President Jane Stanton FCA and CEO Rick Ellis regarding CA ANZ’s strategic initiatives and organisational re-alignment to support the new strategic direction of the organisation.

Regional Council has received a briefing on the new online community hub and an outline of planned enhancements to content and delivery of the CA Program and both initiatives look like they will certainly enhance the value the organisation will deliver to existing and future members.

We can look forward to hearing more detail on these and other strategic initiatives over the coming weeks and months. Recap of last month's events/activities

Regional Council met in late March and had a wide-ranging discussion on various matters. These included the strategic initiatives noted above, CPD requirements and how these might be more clearly communicated to members and how we might engage more effectively with members in Academia. You should expect updates on these matters over the coming months.

We also discussed how the organisation responds to member compliments and complaints and provided some feedback to management on the process for dealing with these. 

Upcoming events

As usual, the Victorian region has several exciting events planned for members over the coming months, but there are two events I’d like to call out for members in the Public Sector and Corporate segments.

On 11 May 2018, the Victorian Public Sector Panel will present the Public Sector Forum which is a half day event developed by members in the Public Sector for members in the Public Sector, providing an opportunity to hear from speakers on topics relevant to the sector and network with peers in the sector.

Similarly, on 23 May 2018, members in Corporate can experience Business Forum which will be a half day conference showcasing best practice and focussing on topical and timely content relevant to that segment of the membership. This event has been developed by the Victorian Corporate Advisory Panel.

Regional manager's report

Regional forums

One of our key priorities for 2018 has been the development of a series of local “Forums” where members can access multiple hours of CPD for half day sessions at our Melbourne office. To ensure we were developing content targeted at members needs, we’ve received wonderful support from each of the member advisory panels during this process.

With this in mind, I’m delighted to confirm that we have now scheduled 3 Regional Forums over the next 4 months, each delivering a minimum of 4 hours CPD at a Member Price of $195. Each Forum will be held in the Melbourne office

  • Public Sector Forum – building on the success of our first Public Sector Forum in late October 2017, we will hold our second forum on Monday 11 May 2018 from 12:30pm.
  • Business Forum – our first Victorian Business Forum is scheduled for Wednesday 23 May 2018 from 12:30pm.
  • Practice Forum – our first Victorian Practice Forum is scheduled for Friday 3rd August 2018 from 12:30pm.

A key theme for this year’s Victorian Forums will be to continue to focus on ongoing awareness of the importance of well-being and mentally healthy workplaces, and we’re thrilled to have the support of beyondblue to assist with facilitating these discussions.

Social media pilot

We’ve now completed the pilot phase of the Victorian Social Media Pilot.

At the conclusion of the pilot we have 1,554 members connected to us via Facebook and LinkedIn, many of whom have provided feedback on how they’d like us to utilise the channels and what sort of content they’re looking for.

We’re encouraged by the engagement and interactions between members in the groups and encourage everyone to keep themselves updated regularly with the discussions, and we’ll communicate the results of the Pilot with a way forward over the coming weeks.

World Congress of Accountants (WCoA), Sydney, 5-8 November 2018
