Regional Manager Update

I've recently been offered and accepted the role of Regional Manager – Tasmania and Victoria at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and I look forward to continue to serve you and your fellow CA ANZ members. As mentioned by Lyndal in her article, we are planning some Member Town Hall meetings around the state in mid-August and I would value your input for these sessions or at any point in the future.

Recap of last months events

On Thursday 4 April we were joined by CA ANZ Councillor, Danny McCarthy who hosted members and their guests for a CA ANZ Certificate Presentation Ceremony and Member Networking Event at the Salamanca Inn. During the evening we welcomed new members, a new Fellow, new Certificate of Public Practice holders and members cerebrating 25 years and 40 years membership. Congratulations to all our recipients and thanks to everyone who joined the celebration. I’m also pleased to advise that Tasmania’s first female Chartered Accountant, Ilma Lisson FCA has achieved 70 years membership and I will be delivering Ilma’s certificate to her in May - congratulations Ilma!

On Wednesday 17 April, CA ANZ Australian Tax Leader, Michael Croker provided a Sharing Knowledge Tax Update at the Salamanca Inn to our members. Michael's presentation covered the key tax measures announced in the 2019 Federal Budget, the tax policies of the major parties for the upcoming Federal Election, ATO assurance work and the compliance activities of the Tax Practitioners Board, the Chartered Accountants ANZ approach to tax advocacy and the current consultation agenda with the ATO. Thanks to Michael for a great session and to all our members for attending. 

Upcoming events

On Thursday 16 May we are holding a Building Knowledge session at the Salamanca Inn: "How best to communicate with the ATO on debt recovery". Travis Anderson, Partner of Deloitte Financial Advisory  and Chris Groves, Principal of Dobson Mitchell Allport Lawyers will cover:

  • Early warning signs
  • Risk for clients and advisors
  • Director penalty notices
  • Winding up applications and
  • Director exposure

Regional Chair Update

The Federal election has been called and combined with the recently handed-down budget, we seem to be set for an interesting few months in the accounting landscape.

One of the big talking points to come out of the budget was tax cuts, with both Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten promising similar short-term relief to people with taxable incomes between $45,000 and $125,000.

Longer term, there are substantial differences between the two major party’s policies and it will certainly be interesting to see how Tasmania responds.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Andrew Quinlan to the role of Regional Manager for Victoria and Tasmania. Andrew previously held the role of Deputy Regional Manager and is a familiar face for many Tasmanian CA ANZ members with a great understanding of the state. Andrew, I know I can speak on behalf of the Council in saying we are all looking forward to working closely with you again.

Our most recent Tasmanian Regional Council meeting was held on Thursday 4 April at the Salamanca Inn and we were joined by our new Young Observer, Jake Norris, CEO of Hansen Orchards. Welcome Jake!

Lee Whitney, CA ANZ’s Group Executive for Account Management shared an update on the structure and role of Account Management, more about the CA Catalyst initiative, how “Community” style events are being leveraged to engage groups of employers or members in regional areas and some of the product and service review that is currently underway.

We were also joined by Simon Hann, CA ANZ’s Group Executive for Education and Learning who shared an update on the CA Program, the work that is being undertaken in developing a Capability Framework for CAs, the future of the CA Program and the status of Flexible Entrance Pathways.

The meeting concluded with discussion around a Member Town Hall roadshow that is being planned for the North West, North and South of the state in mid-August and so please keep an eye out for invitations to the events closer to the time. We are very interested in your views so it would be great to see you at these Town Hall events and please also feel free to share any feedback ahead of the events.
