Tasmania Regional News June 2018

Updating you on recent and forthcoming activities in Tasmania

In brief

  • Update from Paul Breen, Tasmania Chair
  • Update from Andrew Quinlan, Deputy Regional Manager

June 2018 Tasmanian Regional Council Chair update

It was wonderful to see so many members at last month’s cocktail function in Hobart – it was a fantastic night and a great chance to share a drink and a chat with the CA ANZ Board.

I would like to congratulate and thank both CA ANZ Board member Mike Blake FCA, who received the CA ANZ Meritorious Service Award for his outstanding service to the organisation and Robert Groom FCA, who was recognised with a CA ANZ Fellowship for his tireless efforts.

The Tasmanian Regional Council also had the pleasure of CA ANZ CEO Rick Ellis and Board member Mike Blake FCA attending our May meeting, providing us with an insightful opportunity to discuss how we can align the resources of the organisation to tackle several important advocacy issues at a state level.

As the daylight hours get shorter and the working hours inevitably get longer in the lead up to the end of financial year, I would like to draw your attention to an article by CA ANZ Tax Leader Michael Croker about preparing for the unique new challenges tax time in 2018 will present for CAs in Public Practice.

With the ATO set to deliver their biggest ever tax time education campaign and signaling it will be focusing on the large tax gap for individuals, it is now more important than ever for CAs to focus on the steps that need to be undertaken to protect your clients, your practice and your personal brand.

In this article Michael presents a number of interesting points to consider, including how to manage client risk, leadership of junior staff and value adding to your clients through discussions of recent legislative developments and the Federal Budget. The end of financial year has always been a good time to train staff on any new developments and Michael suggests special attention should be paid to the “What’s New” section of the ATO’s 2018 Form I instructions, especially considering the ATO is reportedly undertaking Form I random audits.

As part of this month’s update I would also like to introduce you to CA ANZ Tasmanian Regional Councillor, Anita Robertson CA. Anita is based in Hobart and has been on the council for five years, bringing with her 17 years of finance and accounting experience.

Through her current roles as Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary at Metro Tasmania and Director at General Practice Training Tasmania, and through past experience at PwC and Deloitte, Anita has developed an invaluable skill set which lends itself perfectly to her corporate and government businesses council portfolio.

As a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Anita is passionate about the effective governance of organisations, holding a particular interest in the financial management of not-for-profit organisations as evidenced by her work as Director and Chair of the Finance Sub Committee at Lady Gowrie Tasmania.

If there is anything the Council or CA ANZ can assist you with or you’ve got an issue you’d like us to look into, as always please get in touch with me.

Chair, Tasmanian Regional Council
