August 2018 Tasmanian Regional Council Chair update

Well, we're definitely in the grips of winter now, a fact that I was reminded of today when the crispest of winds blew down from Hobart's snow-covered mountain during a lunchtime stroll.

And unless you've been hiding under a rock, you would have seen that our big rock has been dominating public and media discussions of late.

The topic of the Mount Wellington cable car certainly raises some interesting questions about the direction of the Tasmanian economy, particularly regarding the booming tourism sector and I think the eventual decision (whichever way it goes) will be a landmark point in determining what the future holds for our state.

Tax Sharing Knowledge event

It was a pleasure to have CA ANZ's Australian Tax Leader Michael Croker present at our Tax Sharing Knowledge event in Hobart this month. A veritable wealth of knowledge, Michael leads our taxation policy and advocacy work with Federal and State governments and regulatory bodies in Australia. He previously led the team that developed the CA ANZ tax, superannuation and financial advisory services training program.

I'm sure I speak for all who attended, by saying his insights into the tax policies of the major parties for the next Federal Election and the ATO's modernisation plans were extremely valuable. The event also provided a great opportunity to get an update on the current issues CA ANZ is advocating for on a national level.

On a state level, to take action on the issues that matter most to our members, the CA ANZ Tasmanian Regional Council always welcomes your thoughts on which areas you believe are most in need of address - please be in contact if there are any issues you would like to raise.

Facebook page

If you haven't already, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to join the Chartered Accountants Tasmanian Members Group on Facebook. The group is a fantastic tool for members to access up-to-date information on upcoming CA ANZ events, read the latest news and opinion pieces and to take part in valuable discussion with other members.

To join the group, simply search Facebook for the 'Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand' page, find the 'groups' option in the list on the left-hand side of the page and request to join 'Tasmanian Members Group'.

New member

The Council member I would like to acquaint you with for August is Jason Binder CA. Jason joined the Council at the beginning of this year and has quickly shown his worth through his in-depth knowledge of organisational structures and growth.

As a Graduate Member of the AICD, holding a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA, Jason is passionate about company turnarounds and in his current role as the Managing Director of Respect Aged Care has overseen the growth of the organisation from financial difficulty to expansion.

If you would like to pick the Council's brains about any matter, large or small, please be in contact with me.

Stay warm,

Paul Breen FCA
Chair - Tasmanian Regional Council

Thought Leadership Paper

CA ANZ has just released a new paper in conjunction with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Singapore focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) & ethics: "Machines can learn, but what will we teach them?" The paper provides insights into how AI is revolutionising our world but not necessarily helping us flourish as human beings. It recognises that while AI brings with it a range of ethical considerations, they should not be left to the tech giants to decide. Importantly, we also look into the role the accounting profession has to play in shaping how AI is integrated into businesses in a socially responsible way.

The paper is available for download:

Chartered Accountants Advisory Group (CAAG)

I wanted to highlight once again the important work done by the Victorian & Tasmanian Chartered Accountants Advisory Group (CAAG) and once more thank members for their continued service to the Tasmanian membership. For those members not aware of CAAG, they provide counselling and support for CAs facing ethical dilemmas or weighing career decisions.

The Victorian & Tasmanian CAAG is chaired by David Gibbs FCA and consists of a local panel of experienced, senior CAs with a broad cross-section of public practice, business and public sector experience offering guidance for fellow members. They provide advice and support to CA ANZ members on professional and ethical matters. The service is free and all discussions are strictly confidential.

If you would like to know more about CAAG or refer a query to the group, please email me at
