Update from the Regional Manager
CA ANZ has begun a phased return to our offices subject to local guidelines and some of our team members are working from the Adelaide office 2 or 3 days per week, but we are not yet open to members. We will provide further updates on this as the situation evolves.
We recently held a unique AGM in that our 87th edition of the event was conducted completely online. Thank you to our Chair Luke Kerins for hosting the event and updating our members and congratulations to Jodie Silvester (NT) and Anthony Stewart (SA) on being elected to the SA/NT Council from 2021. Thank you also to Luke and Tyson Holt whose terms expire at the end of this year and to the members that nominated for Council, it is great to increased engagement in our organisation. Keep an eye on your emails for details about nominating for the single appointed position we still have available on the SA/NT Council.
Our first face-to-face event in over 6 months took place on Friday 9 October as we hosted a Future of Business breakfast with our State Treasurer, Rob Lucas, MLC. Mr Lucas was expertly interviewed by political journalist Tory Shepherd covered a range of topics including:
- The assumption of the implementation of population wide vaccinations by the end of 2021 in the economic forecasts of the Federal budget, State budget to be based on similar assumptions.
- Increased optimism in the Federal Budget around unemployment peaking at 8%, not 10% as stated in earlier assumptions by the Federal Government.
- State Budget to mirror Federal in large levels of expenditure and debt, but the Government is comforted that the Reserve Bank is intervening and low interest rates will be in place for the foreseeable future, ensuring that borrowing is taking place at record low interest rates;
- There will be a significant increase in government funded infrastructure projects including schools, hospitals, roads and sporting infrastructure as a part of a 2-year economic stimulus recovery program.
- Continued focus on support for small to medium-sized businesses in SA through grants, payroll tax relief extended until the end of 2020, and looking at other measures to support the SME segment.
- Increase in expenditure over the past 20 years has been far greater in non-GST items and therefore has not grown at the rate it was forecast to, despite this and some other tax discussions in other states, there is little chance of any significant National tax reform right now.
- The Treasurer cannot foresee any changes to Payroll Tax in the short, medium or long term.
In other interesting news, Bronny Speed, Leader of Financial Advice at CA ANZ was recently interviewed on ABC radio on the impacts of low interest rates for investing. She spoke of options available and suggested CAs were well placed to assist consumers, especially those who are CA Financial Planning Specialists. For the full interview, click here.

Cth Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment extended to SA
The Federal Government has extended Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment arrangements in place with VIC, NSW, WAS and Tasmania to SA and QLD workers. The Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment is a $1,500 lump sum payment to help an individual during the 14 day self-isolation, quarantine or caring period. In line with the other states, workers will not be eligible for the payment if they are receiving income, earnings or salary maintenance from work, receiving the JobKeeper Payment or other forms of Australian Government income support, or receive a Pandemic Leave payment from the SA Government or QLD Government.Read media release
Meet the CA turned Lego Master
He showed that risk assessment and meeting tight deadlines are all in a day’s work, especially in a LEGO competition. Trent Cucchiarelli CA is most famous as the CA who made the final of Nine’s LEGO Masters in season two. He drew from his background as a CA to help him through the competition and LEGO Masters taught him greater communication skills, which he is now using in his accounting job.Read more
Office Update and Events
The Adelaide office remains closed to members for the time being. CA ANZ continues to monitor government advice on social distancing and public gatherings, and our number one priority is protecting and supporting our members, our team and the more vulnerable members in our communities.
Workshops, conferences and most education events will primarily remain online across Australia and New Zealand. This means there are more offerings available to you through the delivery of our online events. Please go to the CA ANZ Store page and watch your emails (check your junk email folders now and then) to see what events are coming up for members across Australia and New Zealand. We'd love to see you online!
With our pivot to digital event delivery we are creating more opportunities to engage with you, and for you to connect with us and your fellow peers. We encourage members to join the COVID-19 Group on MyCA to engage with other members and access resources during this challenging time.
