- September update from Queensland Regional Council Chair - Troy Popham
- Summary of upcoming events in the Queensland region
Regional Chair Update
During the last period of time I’ve had the benefit of undertaking member engagement throughout the state and have enjoyed enjoy catching up with membership, sharing issues and challenging through processes. This has culminated in events in Mackay with their Winter Tax School (which concluded with a mini certificate ceremony) as well as in Rockhampton, where Penny and I attended and which was well received.
I was lucky to participate in the Strategic Review meetings that have been happening throughout the Trans-Tasman. All in all, nearly 100 meetings were undertaken engaging with members, and our new CEO Rick Ellis has been tasked with looking after the outcomes. I look forward to seeing these outcomes.
The Queensland Regional Council had our annual review of fellowship nominations and these have now been escalated through to Trans-Tasman uCouncil for discussion.
I was fortunate enough to host the 89th Queensland Annual General Meeting of CA ANZ, and this was very successful with over eighty attendees. As always, it’s an honour to present milestone certificates and pins to 25, 40 and 50 year serving Chartered Accountants.
In my hometown of Townsville I was able to share in the Business Professionals Week activities. One of the highlights was a presentation by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys CEO Greg Tonner who himself qualified as a CA. We heard about the business of football and digitalisation, its impact on the community, and the enormous steps that this regional powerhouse is taking in the National Rugby League.
We now head into the busy Christmas season where we have hosted a number of member engagement events and Christmas events, all up the east coast of the state. I was fortunate enough to attend the Mackay and Sunshine Coast events to further engage with our membership as they started to wind down a little from this very busy year.
We have also completed our annual Queensland Council Reviews around our council highlights and improvement areas. We look forward to seeing some of the initiatives from these reviews rolled out in 2018.
As this will probably be my last communication as Regional Council Chair, I’d like to say what a privilege and honour it has been to serve you, our Queensland members, over the past fifteen years in my various capacities and the last twelve months as your Queensland Regional Council Chair.
I wish you and your families a safe and happy Christmas break, hoping you get to enjoy a relaxing break and come back refreshed for what will hopefully be an exciting 2018.

CFO Panel Lunch
Close to 100 CAs joined us on Wednesday this week for a fascinating session with three finance chiefs operating across industry sectors which have either been disrupted, transformed or evolved rapidly over the past 5 years; how their businesses have fared in response to enormous disruption and how their own roles have evolved to encompass future thinking, use and value of data, the importance of communication through change and the value of their people.
Awesome session from the panel and very capably facilitated by Mark Payne FCCA – a great CA/ACCA collaboration!
Welcome to Summer YCA Event
The “Welcome to Summer” YCA networking event played host to 200 lawyers and CA’s from in and around Brisbane. The balmy Brisbane evening and riverside location, was a great opportunity for young members to meet other professionals, swap business cards and Link In with each other. Thanks to Westpac and Mercedes Benz for supporting this event.
