Introducing your Queensland Regional Council chair for 2019 – Peter O’Regan FCA
Peter was elected to the Queensland Regional Council in 2013, and proudly represents members in regional Queensland, on both this Council and on the trans-Tasman Rural and Regional Advisory Committee. Peter is also the Queensland representative on the trans-Tasman CAANZ Council, and has played a significant role in supporting and advocating for regional members throughout Australia during his two terms.
We look forward to supporting Peter as he fulfils his duties as Chair this year, and you will hear more from him in next month’s update.
Well, the year has started with challenges for many across the state – with drought still ravaging parts of the West, and colleagues in the far north dealing with the devastating effects of the flooding and extreme weather, and all the resulting damage and rebuilding that will be to follow. We are committed to supporting our members and their communities up north as well as out west so please do reach out to us if we can be of any assistance during these tough times.
The Queensland state government recently stood up its Economic Recovery Group to provide a response for the business community in the wake of the FNQ floods, and here are some links below to resources for members and for their clients:
Checklist for Small Businesses
Chartered Accountants ANZ previously developed a checklist for members following cyclone Debbie to support business continuity, particularly for small businesses impacted by the disaster, which we believe still has value for members.Read more
In addition, please also be aware of the Chartered Accountants Advisory Group (CAAG), which consists of experienced members who are available to talk through an issue with you that is troubling you on an entirely confidential basis – please contact me to access this service.
Queensland Regional Members Group Chairs Meeting
The energetic and committed chairs of many of our regional members groups met earlier this month in Brisbane to hear key updates from the organisation on our education strategy, the new MyCA members landing page and an update on small business regulatory matters from reps from the ATO, ASIC and the Queensland Small Business Champion. A jam-packed agenda, and hopefully the chairs have gone back to their regions with plenty to update members on.
First event of the year – Sharing Knowledge
Record numbers of members attended our first Sharing Knowledge for 2019 – an economic update from the highly-credentialled Matthew Peter, Chief Economist at QIC. Matthew kindly also presented at one of our suburban member groups in February, which also drew record attendee numbers. Regional Queensland - look out for more Knowledge sessions coming your way soon.
Regional Event - Cairns
It was a great turnout at the Cairns Members PD Lunch on Thursday 13th February 2019. Members enjoyed a lively and interactive session with speaker Natalie Thompson presenting on "A Non-Diet Approach to a More Productive You in the Workplace.

Opportunities and Updates
Karen McWilliams Business Reform leader, from our thought leadership team in Sydney joined us in Brisbane on the 5th and 6th February to run several small workshops and discussion groups for the following clients: Flight Centre, Morgans and QSuper.
Karen’s focus during these sessions was on Modern Slavery in an Australian Context and related reporting requirement, as well as the 2019 sustainability landscape including Climate-related risk disclosures, Integrated Reporting, wider sustainability initiatives (including SDGs) and non-financial assurance.
These interactive sessions were well received by our clients and CA ANZ members in Brisbane. Karen and Geraldine Magarey also presented at Griffith’s Professional Futures Conference during a session titled: “Angst, Algorithms and AI: Threats and Disruptions?”
CA Catalyst is in full swing. During the month of January, inaugural Brisbane Fishburners CA-in-Residence, Robert Pitt CA, successfully challenged Founders on the financial model of their businesses whilst educating them on the important role their cashflow and financial literacy play in predicting their companies future trajectories.
This month’s CA-in-Residence Natalia Florez CA, will draw on her experiences as a technology start-up CFO, to teach Founders the power of properly constructing and understanding their budgetary constraints and requirements.
Expression of interest for CA Program Markers and facilitators
Members may like to register their interest in contributing back to their profession through CA Program Exam marking participation. The organisation is always seeking interest from members to be involved, and the time spent participating is both paid and can be included into CPE, as an excellent way to remain abreast of contemporary approaches to key technical aspects of a CA’s role. Interested members should download and complete an Expression of Interest form and submit to email@example.com
