Regional Chair update
March, April and May have been a busy three months for both Regional Council and the Queensland management team with a range of CA events and activities around the State.
Immediately prior to Easter it was pleasing to see the high level of attendance at both the Accounting and Audit full day conferences held at the Sofitel in Brisbane. The quality of the presentations covering a wide range of topics was excellent and I would like to pass on our thanks to the presenters from Queensland and nationally who volunteered their time to make the conferences a success.
As I mentioned in my previous update, one of Regional Council’s key goals this year is to increase the level of communication to our members in regional Queensland. As part of our plan to achieve this, on 28 March I hosted our first teleconference update with our regional group chairs. A focus of the session was to ensure our regional groups are kept up to date on the latest activities associated with the roll out of CAANZ’s strategic priorities for 2018. An opportunity was also provided for participants to share some of the latest activities in their areas and to highlight the issues which are most relevant to our members in their respective regions. The next teleconference will be scheduled towards the end of June.
Queensland regional council recently held its annual offsite meeting in Rockhampton where we were generously hosted by James Becker & Co in their offices adjacent to the new river precinct. It is great to see the positive impact the river precinct and other associated development activity is having in the Rocky area. Our meeting was closely followed by an excellent local members’ event featuring a panel discussion on the topic of the future of farming. The level of engagement and attendance from both local CA’s and the broader business community in Rockhampton was excellent. The evening was a highly effective profiling activity for CAANZ and Sarah Becker CA, Michelle Williamson CA, Debbie Dreaver and the local members group should be commended for the excellent program of events they are delivering.
Other key areas of ongoing activity include Queensland member input into the strategic review of the CA program, some preliminary piloting activity associated with the development of the CA community hub platform, and a range of ongoing education events such as the Public Practice Program workshops which continue to be well attended.
As we head quickly towards the middle of the year some notable upcoming member events include the Winter Tax and Super Schools around the state from early July. Planning is also well advanced for our annual engagement with State Government and Opposition representatives.

Fellowship Nominations are now open
Each year Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand recognises outstanding achievement in or contribution to the profession by awarding Fellowships to its members. Fellowship acknowledges members whose achievement or contribution benefits CA ANZ, the community, business or through teaching, research or writing in the field of accounting. If you know an outstanding Chartered Accountant, consider nominating them.
Honorary Treasurer for NFP Foundation – Business Education
Queensland Private Enterprise Centre (QPEC) is seeking a suitably qualified individual to act as honorary Treasurer. QPEC supports the delivery of a high school-based business management program – ECOMAN - through partial funding for schools and the provision of facilitators to deliver these programs in hosted corporate venues throughout Queensland.
In order to support these activities, the role of Treasurer involves the preparation of financial reports and analysis of programs as they are delivered, managing the financial position of QPEC, attendance at regular Executive Committee meetings and ad hoc duties as required.
This is an excellent first step into the not-for-profit sector for a qualified CA.
