The value of any membership depends not only on the services and benefits offered but how connected a member feels and how the organisation responds and represents them.
Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand has regional councils across Australia and leadership committees around New Zealand to ensure members have their say in the organisation’s strategy and directions.
Here we talk to one of our NSW regional councillors, Joyce Low FCA.
1) Please give us a brief introduction of yourself
My name is Joyce Low, I am the Chief Financial Officer/Director Governance & Risk at the NSW Public Service Commission. I have just finished my first term on NSW Council, having been elected in 2019, and have recently been reappointed for a second term.
2) What is your passion area?
I am passionate about working in the public sector for the citizens of New South Wales, creating a world-class public service by placing the people at the centre of everything we do.
My CA designation has opened many doors for me in my career in the public sector.
3) Does the Council have an impact on the governance at CA ANZ. If so, how?
The regional councils are an integral part of the governance framework of CA ANZ and connects the CA ANZ Council and Board to its members. Regional councils are the voice of the members.
4) What are the trends you feel will affect your fellow members soon?
The role that accountants play in the future will be very different and exciting. We have moved away from a scorekeeper and compliance position to advisory roles in recent time. Moving forward, we should broaden our horizons to be vision builders, continuously challenging the status quo.

5) Have you picked up a new skill or hobby during lockdown?
I started baking sourdough bread before the lockdown and the extra time I get at home has just allowed me to try to bake other things with my sourdough starter.
