Have your say on the future NZ Tax system

The Tax Working Group has invited the public to share their views about the current NZ tax system. The Group has released a detailed background paper and has put forward five key questions for consideration: what does the future of tax look like to you? What is the purpose of tax? Are we taxing the right things? Can tax make housing more affordable? What tax issues matter most to you? Responses will inform the Group’s interim report to the Government in September. Submissions close on 30 April 2018.

New Zealand Tax Leader, John Cuthbertson, and Chair of the Tax Advisory Group, Paul Dunne, recently appeared before the Finance and Expenditure Committee (FEC) to deliver oral submissions on the Taxation (Neutralising Base Erosion and Profit Shifting) Bill.

Revenue Alert – dividend stripping

Inland Revenue has published a Revenue Alert outlining the Commissioner’s view on certain share sales to related entities where some or all of the proceeds are at high risk of being treated as a dividend for tax purposes. This is a current area of focus in Inland Revenue audits.
