Member Vote changes to commence in 2020

The final stage of CA ANZ’s Member Vote changes has been successfully completed and will be fully operational from 1 January 2020.

In Brief

  • Member Vote changes have been successfully completed
  • They will start to be fully operational from 1 January 2020
  • The changes were passed by CA ANZ members in a member vote held in May

The 2019 Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Member Vote changes have been successfully completed and will start to become operational from 1 January 2020.

This is the final stage of a governance review which updated CA ANZ's governance to reflect membership growth and increase diversity.

In July 2019, the Australian Governor-General David Hurley approved changes to CA ANZ's Supplemental Royal Charter and By-Laws. The changes were passed by CA ANZ members in a member vote held in May.

As part of the changes, each Australia Regional Council has appointed three councillors, in addition to the existing elected councillors. As such, no elections were necessary this year as these positions had already been filled.

The Overseas Regional Councils of Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and United Kingdom have completed their election and appointment processes and will comprise nine new councillors on each council.

New Zealand Council has appointed four new councillors. An election was also completed for the Southern Region role.

The 15 Local Leadership Teams in New Zealand have changed their names to Local Committees and are now appointed rather than elected bodies. The New Zealand Council appointed all Local Committee members for 2020 at its meeting on 5 December 2019.

Candidates for the new independent Nominations and Governance committee member, and CA ANZ Councillor, are currently undergoing interviews, which will continue into the new year.

The Supplemental Royal Charter, By-Laws and New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) Rules changes strengthen CA ANZ's Professional Conduct By-Laws, provide for the establishment of Overseas Regional Councils, increased continuity in Board appointments by CA ANZ Council, increase flexibility and inclusion of representation and strengthen the NZICA Rules.
