Meet Oscar Cheal - the 2021 recipient of the Chartered Accountants ANZ-CEF Scholarship

Country Education Foundation (CEF) works to ensure that all young rural and regional Australians achieve their dreams through supported access to further education, training and jobs. In partnership with CA ANZ, a new scholarship has been created and its inaugural awardee is emerging accountant, Oscar Cheal.

In Brief

  • CA ANZ has partnered with the Country Education Foundation (CEF) to award the CA ANZ-CEF Scholarship
  • 2021 inaugural recipient Oscar Cheal grew up in regional Lightning Ridge NSW, developing close connections with CEF
  • Cheal will benefit from ongoing mentorship, job placement opportunities with CA ANZ members and opportunities to sharpen his networking skills.

The CA ANZ-CEF Scholarship is available to students who live in rural and regional Australia and provides the recipient with a total of $21,000 financial support ($7,000 per annum over three years).

Its purpose is to support the recipient's further education and can be put towards studying a tertiary qualification that meets the CA Program entry requirements, or completing the CA Program.

The recipient of the scholarship benefits from mentoring, networking, and job placement opportunities provided by CA ANZ members.

For the inaugural scholarship winner, Oscar Cheal, it isn't just about the financial relief, but also the doors it has opened to help him expand his professional network within the accounting field.

says Cheal.
"It's about the experience you have in your young professional life and the people you get to know along the way. Going to the morning tea to receive the scholarship officially, I couldn't believe the people that were surrounding me and the experiences they've each had in their careers."

Cheal recognises the potential of this unique opportunity to further his education and professional experience, and is driven to make the most of his situation.

"Opportunities like this don't come up very often so if you don't believe in yourself enough to reach out and actually speak to people of influence, then sometimes you can miss those opportunities. Don't get me wrong I was definitely still nervous, but I decided to ignore those nerves and get to know a few people," says Cheal.

Cheal says scholarships are by nature there to be applied for, and he encourages any student who grew up in rural and regional Australia to take a chance and apply to help them take their early career to the next level.

"I have such appreciation for CA members. The way they offer both their support and guidance is so inspiring. A simple conversation with a seasoned pro can go a long way, and I couldn't thank CA and CEF any more for giving me the opportunity," says Cheal.

"There's always more things you can do. More things you can learn. More things you can juggle. So you might as well give it a go while you've got the energy and time!"
