Events of note last month

January and February are always a time when our staff plan for and prepare events in the coming year. While there are relatively few member events on, at this time, we have some time to ourselves to enrich our workplace. On 25 January we had our annual Bring your kids to work day. This is always a tremendous success and allows our children to come and see where mum or dad sweat it out every day.

We also used this time for preparation of a charity event the Wellington CA ANZ office supported.  A CA ANZ team of 17 runners and one mountain biker represented your professional body in the PwC Foundation Charity Relay 2019.  The relay started at the PwC Centre on Wellington’s waterfront at 7.30 am on Friday 22 February and ended at a vineyard in Martinborough 100km later.  The event was a great success and a day enjoyed by everyone.   

The event was invitation only, 100km charity fund-raising relay, supporting Ronald McDonald House, Wellington Free Ambulance and the Life Flight Trust. The first runner was your new President Stephen Walker FCA and the last runner was NZ Country Head, Peter Vial FCA.  We actively fundraised in the office with Burgers-on-a-Balcony being very popular and a raffle for an assortment of scratchy tickets.   We also setup a Givealittle Page – as every little bit helps.

On 24 January we had one of our regular, foundational events. The CA Induction Evening: Term 1, gives starters on the CA Pathway an indication of the workload imposed, the study habits required and the significant additional resources that CA ANZ provides to assist them.

On 31 January we also had the first Local Leadership Team (LLT) meeting of the year in Wellington. It was a very productive meeting with news of our first learning offering in the new year. Early in December the LLT held a planning meeting looking at the sort of subjects that the Wellington members might want in the coming year. It was a very productive session with several themes coming out that will be followed during the year.

Join us at the Future of Trust Series in Wellington to hear from top CEOs, CFOs and leading ethics experts. The series supports the launch of the “Future of Trust” research paper published by Chartered Accountants in February 2019 and will discuss the evolving role of Chartered Accountants as trusted advisors.

We will put ethical lens across business and finance and explore how to make everyday business decisions in an ethically sound way. A light breakfast will be served from 7.45am for each event, with the sessions running from 8am to 9am with 1 hour of CPD per event.

The first session is Thursday, 21 March and the last on Tuesday, 21 May, 2019. The series features four breakfast sessions with national and international speakers. Across the four sessions you will hear insights from:

Special guest of the series is Clare Payne, leading voice on ethics in society and EY Fellow for Trust and Ethics. Do not miss her session on 4 April.

Future Prospects on Charity Law, Accounting and Regulation in New Zealand ConferenceThursday 11 and Friday 12 April 2019

Building on the success of 2018, this multi-disciplinary conference covers legal, accounting and related practical issues associated with the charitable sector, and aims to:

  • Inform and educate on important topics for charities
  • Strengthen links, contacts and collaboration within the sector community
  • Share lessons learnt and best practice that have worked for others, within New Zealand and beyond
  • Stimulate discussion and input into the review of the Charities Act 2005. The hosts are bringing together a wide range of voices and perspectives to consider the issues before us all.

This conference will provide opportunities for rich conversation on the review of the Charities Act and what the framework of charity law should look like in the future.

Among the speakers are leading figures from New Zealand and overseas, including: the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector Hon Peeni Henare, Professor Matthew Harding from the University of Melbourne and chair of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, Dr Oonagh Breen, Professor of Law, University College Dublin, Donna Flavell, CEO Waikato Tainui, Justice Joe Williams, speakers from Charities Services, and leading academics and practitioners from New Zealand and overseas.
