Latest Life Members recognised

Three FCAs have been made Life Members, the highest honour bestowed by the Council of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), recognising exceptional careers of senior members of the profession.

Sydney’s Dennis Robertson FCA, and Chris Welch FCA and Eric Tracey FCA in the UK, are the latest members to receive the honour which is restricted to 40 at any one time.

In July 2020, David Gibbs FCA from Victoria was announced as an addition to the renowned list of Life Members. 

CA ANZ President Peter Rupp expressed his gratitude for the outstanding contributions to the profession of the new Life Members over many years.

"The prestige of Life Memberships comes from the fact that it is awarded to members who go above and beyond expectations.

“This is reflected in the fact that there are only 26 members with the award.”

Dennis Robertson FCA


Dennis Robertson FCA

Dennis is an eminent NSW member with an impressive career and a long history of involvement with CA ANZ (and previously ICAA) and the wider profession.

He has over 40 years professional experience in audit, taxation and business services and is currently a consultant for CA firm Weston Woodley & Robertson. He was also Chairman of GMN International, an international accounting affiliation, from 2002 to 2004. 

Dennis’s long involvement in CA ANZ includes the NSW State Council and various committees including 26 years of service on the Disciplinary Tribunal and seven years with the National Audit Advisory Committee. He is currently a member of the Chartered Accountants Advisory Group in NSW.

Dennis is a Director of Endometriosis Australia and has had a long involvement with regional cancer support network CanAssist including as Company Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and life member.

Eric Tracey FCA


Eric Tracey FCA

UK-based Eric was a partner at Deloitte in London for nearly 25 years until 2004 and the troubleshooting Finance Director at Amey plc and Wembley plc. He has also held independent non-executive directorships at the Chloride Group, NEC Group, Burtons Holdings Ltd and Findel (now Studio Retail Group) Plc and a director and then Chairman of Goodenough College.

He was instrumental in the establishment of a UK based branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) in 1980 and was the inaugural Chair, holding that position for nine years.

Eric is currently a non-executive director of GO Investment Partners LLP and the Chairman for the NZ UK Link Foundation, The UK Friends of Auckland University and Fonthill Park Cricket Club. 

Chris Welch FCA


Chris Welch FCA

Chris has lived in the UK since 1997. He joined the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) Committee in the UK and with a group of like-minded members he led a campaign to get the NZICA constitution amended to allow overseas representation on the NZICA Council and to increase the relevance of the Institute to members who were not in public practice.

He became the first NZICA UK Councillor in 2002 and served as the councillor until 2009 (becoming a Fellow in 2003). He has continued to be involved, especially in relation to immigration issues, and is currently a member of the UK Region Advisory Board.

Before coming to the UK Chris was a partner at Butts Bainbridge and Weir, an accounting practice in Henderson. In the UK he has held a number of Finance Director roles including at a Saudi billionaire’s family office and 12 years at the Association of British Insurers. He now works part-time, currently as the Interim Director of Finance for Access – the Foundation for Social Investment.

Chris is  Deputy Chairman of The Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation UK, a charity set up by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa to support young opera singers who come to the UK to further their careers. He is also a trustee of Project MotorHouse ,a charity based in Ramsgate designed to help young people broaden their skill base to improve employability.

Hailing from Victoria, Australia David has been announced as an addition to the renowned list of Life Members in recognition of his distinguished career in accounting.
