In 2016, the United Nations launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable prosperity around the world. It’s estimated that achieving all 17 goals by 2030 could create US$12 trillion in market opportunities in food and agriculture, energy and materials, health and wellbeing, and cities.
There is now significant global attention on how businesses and capital markets respond to the climate crisis. Investors and other stakeholders consider climate change to be a material issue that can have financial consequences for most companies.
Professional accountants have a critical role in the transition to a low-emissions economy, from instigating action through to evaluating strategies, as well as measuring and reporting performance. They can also look to take steps with their clients and within their own organisations to address these goals.
CA ANZ Business Reform Leader, Karen McWilliams FCA has previously called upon the Australian and New Zealand governments to do more to raise awareness of the goals among the business community.
The role the accounting profession can play in supporting sustainable development, particularly with respect to climate action, will be a key focus for Karen’s speech at the upcoming SEVENTEENx series. The speaking event features 17-minute keynotes by Australia’s leading experts in their fields, as well as a panel Q&A, to engage the business community to take action.
Karen will explore what steps accountants can take to help businesses connect their activities to some of the specific SDGs set out by the United Nations.
Chartered Accountants are invited to attend the events across Australia and New Zealand in person, or to take advantage of the online event.
