Reading of The Charge

All Chartered Accountants, new and existing, were asked to stand for the delivery of the New Member Declaration, also known as "The Charge," by Jillian Richards FCA, Vice-Chair of the Queensland Council

Meryl Johnston CA, came prepared with advice for new members and shared a few stories from her own journey. Meryl had reached out to the membership to ask what advice they would give an accountant in the first 3 years of their career… and the members delivered.

  • Assume positive intent but ask questions.
  • Go to the ‘happy hour’.
  • Take the time after work to reflect on what you did during the day; what changes were made to your work and research why 30 mins a day adds 120 hours per year of additional knowledge that was invaluable for my journey.
  • Your reputation is your most important asset. Build it. Do good work, with the highest quality. Deliver on time. Be helpful. Integrity is everything.
  • Never come to a meeting without something to take notes on.
  • There are so many different roles, divisions and firms you can work in with an accounting degree!

In her speech, Meryl Johnston CA reflected on what she loves about the industry.

"My experience in the accounting industry has been one of collaboration and generosity."

DDSW Regional Committee Chair, Ben Horner CA reflected on how the recognition evenings are an important part of acknowledging the achievements of our members in rural and regional areas, as well as those who have supported us in our studies or careers. Ben also rounded off the evening with everyone up on their feet for a toast. From the achievements of individuals through to their support network.
