Are you eligible to receive a 20% deduction on CA ANZ produced training?

The Australian Government has introduced a boost to encourage small businesses to train and upskill their staff.

In brief

  • Small businesses may be eligible to claim a bonus 20% tax deduction for the costs incurred in relation to CA ANZ training provided to their employees.
  • This is for a limited period only: training costs must be incurred between 7.30pm 29 March 2022 and midnight 30 June 2024.
  • Enrolment must also occur after 29 March 2022 and before midnight 30 June 2024.

The Australian Government has introduced a small business skills and training boost for small businesses with an aggregate turnover of less than $50 million.

These businesses may be eligible to claim a bonus 20% deduction for eligible training expenditure – which includes training providers that are registered under the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (TEQSA), like Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ). 

Enrolment or registration for the training programs, must be incurred after 29 March 2022 and before midnight 30 June 2024. The training must be charged directly or indirectly to the business by the training provider.  

The following training products offered by CA ANZ may be deducted at 120%, provided that the other eligibility requirements are met (for example, the size of the business, timing of expenditure and enrolment or registration and that the training is provided to an employee): 

  • Award and non-award subject enrolments in our TEQSA accredited Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting course. This course forms part of our CA Program.
  • CA ANZ produced continuing professional development (CPD) programs and other courses that do not fall under our TEQSA registration. These include (but are not limited to):
    • Conferences (e.g., Audit and Accounting conference, Tax conference)
    • Seminars (e.g. Tax Training Communities, Navigating Your Career: Strategies from Experienced CAs on Progression and Negotiation)
    • Workshops (e.g., Fringe Benefits Tax workshop, Winter Tax and Super School)
    • Webinars - live and pre-recorded (e.g., Excel tips and tricks business series, Special Tax and Super topics)
    • CA ANZ’s other produced courses (e.g. Public Practice Program, Chartered Accountants Masterclass and our range of Micro courses), and
    • CA ANZ produced on-site training at a client’s premises. 

Training costs that may be covered include (but are not limited to) incidental costs, such as the cost of books or equipment needed for the course/training/CPD programs, provided they are charged by the provider, like CA ANZ.   

Training provided by CA ANZ to sole traders or partners will not likely qualify for the claim/boost as the legislation specifies that the training must be provided to employees.
