Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) annual Achiever Programme has officially kicked off, offering 232 university students paid internships to understand a career in business and accounting.
This comes as 80,000 job openings are expected in the accounting industry over the next five years.
The Achiever Programme offers university students, most in their penultimate year, accounting, commerce and business paid industry internships, lasting between 2-12 weeks.
Transitioning from study into the workforce can be challenging, and the Achiever Programme provides valuable work experience, the opportunity to develop industry contacts, and the opportunity for an insight into a career specialisation.
Lee Whitney, CA ANZ Group Executive Account Management, believes industry experience is vital if students want to get ahead in their profession.
“Employers want work-ready graduates and this is exactly what the Achiever Programme seeks to achieve,” said Whitney.
“Students who attain relevant work experience are much more likely to gain a foot in the door in their industry, compared with those who have solely university knowledge."
“However, the proof is in the pudding."
“In last year’s programme, over 60 percent of surveyed students who have participated, across both Australia and New Zealand, have gone on to secure a form of employment with the employer they completed their internship with."
“What we’re finding is that unlike a lot of other courses, accounting degrees can enable graduates and practitioners to make a real difference in the world.”
Achiever Programme alumni Courtney Slater, said the opportunity to participate in a paid internship provided her with the skills for a smooth transition into the industry.
“The Achiever Programme was an excellent experience,” said Ms Slater.
“If given the opportunity, all students should strive to be a part of it as it creates an important career network and provides exceptional industry knowledge.”
Fellow alumni, Ryan Loo also praised the program.
“The Achiever Programme turned out to be a great programme for me, especially in terms of getting to know the industry,” said Mr Loo.
CA ANZ have been working with a wide range of employers to host students, including large corporates, the Big 4, accounting organisations including small and mid-tier firms, and not-for-profits.
