CA Start-up Coach Programme

Terms and Conditions


1. Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand ABN 50 084 642 571 of 33 Erskine Street, Sydney, NSW 2000 ("CA ANZ") has launched CA Catalyst, an initiative designed to enable growth opportunities for CA ANZ members by leveraging innovation and connecting members with future work practices, technologies and markets today ("CA Catalyst").

2. As part of CA Catalyst, CA ANZ is offering the “CA Start-up Coach” program (“Program”) which gives Chartered Accountants the opportunity to gain a depth of innovation exposure by playing a hands-on role in a start-up community hub of one of CA ANZ's Partners (set out below) by coaching a fintech start-up business for a 3 month period.

Eligibility and application procedure

3. The Program will consist of at least 1 Rotation which will begin on 31 October 2018. CA ANZ may, in its absolute discretion, increase the number of Rotations in the Program. Applications for participation in the Program will be accepted from 12 November 2018 until 11 February 2019 ("Application Period"). CA ANZ may, in its absolute discretion, advertise further application periods for any additional Rotations.

4. To be eligible to apply for a Rotation in the Program, an applicant must during the Application Period:

a) be a Chartered Accountant with at least 5 years of experience in public practice; and

b) agree to commit to a minimum of 2 full days per month for a total of 3 months spent at a start-up community hub in Sydney, Melbourne or Auckland providing Mentorship to a relevant start-up business,

(each eligible applicant, an "Eligible Applicant").

5. To be considered for a Rotation, Eligible Applicants must submit an application during the Application Period that addresses the applicant's:

a) area of specialisation;

b) past and present engagement with CA ANZ;

c) use of, and engagement with, social media;

d) spirit of curiosity, proactive collaboration, entrepreneurialism, innovation, and experience;

e) enthusiasm for the Program and the Fintech sector; and

f) willingness to create content based on the applicant's experiences participating in the Program and share that content with the wider CA ANZ innovation community,

(collectively, the "Selection Criteria"). Applications may be submitted through or by emailing them to [email protected].

Selection process

6. CA ANZ will only consider an application if it is submitted by an Eligible Applicant during the Application Period and addresses the Selection Criteria ("Eligible Application").

Eligibility and entries

7. The selection process of successful applicants will be as follows:

a) Stage 1: after the end of the Application Period CA ANZ will assess applications with reference to the Selection Criteria and create a shortlist of Eligible Applicants;

b) Stage 2: CA ANZ will conduct interviews of shortlisted applicants in a manner and at a time to be agreed upon between CA ANZ and each shortlisted applicant;

c) Stage 3: CA ANZ will create a further shortlist of interviewed applicants and invite them to attend a one-day preparation workshop conducted by CA ANZ which will cover business development skills and understanding start-ups and venture capitalist perspectives;

d) Stage 4: shortlisted applicants will be invited to the start-up community hubs in his/her city to meet with representatives of the respective Partners;

e) Stage 5: Partners will select successful applicants, pair them with a relevant start-up business, and offer them a Rotation in their respective start-up community hubs,

(each successful applicant, a "Participant").

8. There is intended to be between 6 and 10 Participants in total in the first Rotation. CA ANZ reserves the right to increase or decrease the number of Participants in each Rotation.

Obligations of Participants

9. Participants must:

a) attend the start-up community hub which is the subject of their Rotation for a minimum of 2 full days per month for a total of 3 months and provide Coachship to the assigned start-up business;

b) comply with CA ANZ's professional regulations;

c) adopt a 'suggestion based approach' and not advocate any particular strategy or decision on any matter; and

d) at all times behave professionally and ethically.

10. Participants must not in connection with the Program:

a) provide accounting services or advice or financial services or advice to any person, company, business, trust or organisation of any description unless the Participant or a principal in the practice which employs the Participant:

i) holds a valid Certificate of Public Practice or Australian Financial Services Licence or such other qualifications or licensing as required to provide the relevant services; and

ii) has entered into separate formal engagement terms with that person, company, business, trust or organisation;

b) offer services that require skills or qualifications that the Participant does not possess;

c) charge fees for any Coachship or for their participation in the Program; and

d) do anything that is reasonably likely to bring the CA ANZ brand into disrepute.

11. The Participant acknowledges that CA ANZ does not accept any liability in connection with the Program, including any act or omission of a Partner or a start-up community hub, the provision of any accounting advice or services or any financial advice or services or any separate formal engagement that the Participant enters into.

12. Participants may be requested to:

a) deliver an initial personal introduction either as a presentation or speech;

b) produce an “introduction” and “exit” video;

c) create and share content in the form of stories and thought leadership pieces based on the Participant's experiences in the Rotation; and

d) licence any content created during or relating to the Rotation to CA ANZ and the Partners for marketing purposes.

13. Participants will have access to support from CA ANZ during their rotation by contacting Jeremy Rowe at [email protected].

Intellectual Property Rights

14. None of CA ANZ, a Partner, or a Participant assign any Intellectual Property Rights to any other person under these Terms and Conditions.

15. Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall be taken as authorising any of CA ANZ, a Partner, or a Participant to deny or derogate from the Moral Rights of any person.

16. The Participant agrees to licence any content produced in relation to the Program to CA ANZ or a Partner upon request for the purposes of promoting the Program.


17. For any complaints in connection with the running of this Program, Participants should contact Jeremy Rowe at [email protected].

18. Complaints about a Participant in connection with the Program made to CA ANZ by any third-party, including a Partner or member of the start-up community, will be dealt with by CA ANZ in accordance with its disciplinary procedures.

Termination and Variation

19. CA ANZ may terminate the Program or a Participant's Rotation at any time and for any reason.

20. The Participant may terminate a Rotation at any time and for any reason.


21. CA ANZ may collect personal information to conduct the Program and disclose such information to third parties for this purpose, including agents, contractors, service providers, offer suppliers, and the Partners. We have a legitimate interest in using the personal information provided in connection with the Program. The collection of personal information by us is also fundamental to the nature of our obligations in facilitating the Program. Validity of an Eligible Application is conditional on providing this information. While personal information is collected in Australia or New Zealand (as applicable), it is likely that it will be disclosed to overseas recipients outside of Australia, New Zealand and the European Economic Area in accordance with our Privacy Policy. We otherwise use, disclose, process and handle your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy. All applicants consent to their personal information being collected and stored for this purpose in accordance with CA ANZ's privacy policy available at


22. Failure by CA ANZ to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.

23. Subject to clause 25, each applicant and Participant releases CA ANZ (including its officers, employees and agents) from all liability (including negligence) for any personal injury, or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity), whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of the Program, including, but not limited to, where arising out of participation in a Rotation.

24. Nothing in these Terms and Conditions is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any consumer rights under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth) or the Commerce Act 1986 (NZ) or any other legislation which may not be excluded, restricted or modified by agreement.

25. These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of NSW. Applicants submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of NSW.


26. For the purposes of these Terms and Conditions:

a) "Chartered Accountant" means a person who has been admitted to CA ANZ as a chartered accountant in accordance with CA ANZ's By-Laws.

b) "Intellectual Property Rights" means all intellectual property rights in, including but not limited to logos, patents, copyright, registered and unregistered designs, Moral Rights, registered and unregistered trademarks, know-how and the right to have confidential information kept confidential.

c) "Mentorship" includes consultations, discussions and exchanges of ideas about business strategy and business finances, but does not include accounting services or advice or financial services or advice.

d) "Moral Rights" means rights conferred under Part IX of the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) and any similar or analogous rights which exist or come to exist anywhere in the world.

e) "Partner" means each of:

i) Fishburners Limited ABN 32 152 773 647 of Level 2, 11 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia;

ii) Stone and Chalk Limited ABN 29 603 489 229 of Level 4, 11 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia and Goods Shed North, 710 Collins Street, Docklands VIC 3008, Australia; and

iii) The IceHouse Limited NZBN 9429036847730 of The Textile Centre, Level 4, 117-125 St Georges Bay Road, Parnell, Auckland 1052, New Zealand.

f) "Rotation" means a 3 month period during which a Chartered Accountant will be provided with a dedicated workspace within a start-up community hub for two (2) days per month to facilitate Coachship with a start-up business.

g) "start-up community hub" means a co-working space operated by one of the Partners.
